Tsukiji is a busy place with a lot of people around, even in the early morning. From don (rice bowls with various toppings) dishes to meat dishes, you can have a wide variety of breakfast options at Tsukiji. Here are 5 restaurants in Tsukiji, Tokyo, where you can have a great breakfast!
Segawa is a don restaurant that serves zuke-maguro don (rice bowl topped with soy sauce-pickled tuna) that only uses hon-maguro (the finest brand of tuna). The rich taste of the tuna pickled with soy sauce made from a secret formula, along with the flavor of top-grade sushi rice and nori (dried seaweed), fills your mouth as you eat it. The simplicity of the dish shows the confidence they have on the quality of the ingredients. They only served a limited number of their popular Imadake Donburi (1,600 JPY) with chu-toro (medium-fatty tuna) each day. After viewing the tuna auction at Tsukiji, if you are looking for a nearby place where you can enjoy eating delicious tuna, this is the place to be!
Marutoyo is a shop that is famous for the size and taste of their seafood rice balls. They have a variety of original large rice balls, such as the Bakudan that has a half-boiled flavored egg center and the Shachiten with a big deep-fried shrimp center. The rice balls you can buy at a convenience store taste good, but handmade ones taste amazing! The store is so popular that some popular rice balls will be sold out if you don't go there early. The price is pretty reasonable at roughly 200 JPY each. Why not have some unique rice balls for breakfast?
3. Tonkatsu Yachiyo
Tonkatsu Yachiyo is a restaurant within Tsukiji Market that is popular for their deep-fried fresh seafood. It has been supported by the market’s workers for around 80 years. The fried shrimps are really fresh and tender, and delicious hotate (scallops) are fried rare. The Char Siu Egg Teishoku (1,300 JPY) is an incredibly popular dish that is only available on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. The combination of the slow-cooked mushy char siu and egg is golden! It is the signature dish of the place, and most people who come here on Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday, order it. It is highly recommended to try this if you are in Tsukiji on those days.
Kitsune-ya is a restaurant that is well-known for their offal stew cooked in a large pot at the shop front. Their popular meal, Hormone Don (850 JPY), is a rice bowl topped with lots of fresh beef offal cooked with a special sauce that uses Haccho-miso (aged miso from Aichi). Add in plenty of green onions to make it even more appetizing! The rich taste of the miso sauce that has remained the same since the store’s establishment, the unique texture of the offal, and the fresh green onions are all so delightful! If you have a taste for spicy food, you can add some Japanese pepper. It is a really popular store, so when the seats in the shop front are occupied, you have to eat it in the standing area in front of the store.
5. TSUKIJI Nisshintasuke
Unagi (eel) is considered a luxurious food in Japan, but this restaurant was founded to give people easy access to this expensive dish. They have a lot of meals that follow the principle, such as their Service Una-don that is only 750 JPY (incl. tax). Their Mega Una-don (2,200 JPY (incl. tax)) has been featured on the mainstream media several times for its volume and reasonable price. They carefully select unagi that has been farm-raised for less than a year. They start grilling the unagi upon your order, so it will be really soft when served to you.
