Mie is the birthplace of Matsusaka beef, which is considered to be one of the best types of beef in Japan. Dubbed the “meat piece of art,” Matsusaka beef is a famous meat that everyone has to try when they visit Mie. Below are five shops that serve tasty meat dishes in Mie.

1. Ajiyoshi

Ajiyoshi is a restaurant that is known for its fancy façade and clean and fresh-looking interior. It mainly uses Matsusaka beef in its dishes, so guests get to savor the inherent melt-in-your-mouth tenderness of the meat and the delicious flavors of its fat. This restaurant has also been enjoying rave reviews for its original homemade sauce that further boosts the flavors of the meat. Its bestseller is the Matsusaka Beef Tokusen Harami/Sagari (skirt or ribs from the diaphragm), but you have to try its secret specialty first, the Shio Tan (salted tongue) (700 JPY). Your mouth will be flooded with the tasty flavors of tongue in every bite.

2. Yakiniku Tono

Yakiniku Tono is a restaurant that takes pride in its use of carefully selected meats from all over Japan. When it comes to Matsusaka beef, it only uses prime meats with a rating of Grade A4 or higher. Its specialty dish is the Wagyu Oni-Uma Harami (1,600 JPY (excl. tax)). Harami is the organ meat at the back of the diaphragm, which is a rare part. The harami of Hida beef from Gifu comes in limited quantity, so it is available on a first come, first served basis. Enjoy the tenderness and sweetness of the fat in the Meibutsu Wagyu Horumon (offal or organ meat) (550 JPY (excl. tax)), too.

3. Itoshoten

Itoshoten is a yakiniku (grilled meat) restaurant where you can dine on prime Matsusaka beef at reasonable prices. This place also serves Matsusaka-ushi Moriawase (assorted Matsusaka beef) and other Kaiseki Courses (full-course meal) (5,000 JPY (incl. tax) per person) that will let you fully enjoy Matsusaka beef and wagyu (Japanese beef). Apart from Matsusaka beef, there are many other parts of wagyu that you have to try here, such as the Chateaubriand (1,300 JPY (excl. tax)), a part that only gets to as much as 600g in one whole cow, and the [Suryo Gentei] Wagyu Rosu (wagyu sirloin that is limited in quantity) (900 JPY (excl. tax)). This shop procures fresh prime meats, so it also offers a list of dishes that contain raw meat.

4. Maruyoshi Kamata Main Shop

Maruyoshi Kamata Main Shop is a restaurant dedicated to Matsusaka beef that is annexed to a meat shop. The name “Bifuteki” written on the huge signboard perched on its roof is none other than its specialty dish. “Bifuteki” is short for “beef steak”. The Matsusaka Beef Rosu Shindake Steak (20,520 JPY (incl. tax) for 150g) is a luxurious and exquisite dish that uses the center of sirloin, the part with the best meat quality in Matsusaka beef. Further, this shop serves many nabe (hot pot) dishes, including Gyu Toro Sukiyaki (10,638 JPY (incl. tax)) that uses the rare parts on the sides of sirloin.

5. Oka

Established in 1964, Oka is a restaurant where the recommended dish for relishing Matsusaka beef is the Steak (4,200 JPY (incl. tax) – 12,000 JPY (incl. tax)) of fillet and sirloin. Further, the Hamburger Set (1,900 JPY (incl. tax)), a set of the 50-year staple Oka Original Waraji Hamburger with soup, salad and rice, and the Matsusaka-ushi Baraniku Stew (boned rib) (3,400 JPY (incl. tax)) that is stewed in demi-glace (a kind of brown sauce) sauce are also superb choices. Try the Japanese-style Spaghetti Matsusaka Beef Soe (spaghetti with Matsusaka beef) (2,050 JPY (incl. tax)) and Matsusaka Beef Omurice (omelet filled with rice and Matsusaka beef) (1,500 JPY (incl. tax)).

5. Oka

Matsusaka beef is characterized by its appearance that is called “shimofuri” and “sashi,” a state of marbling wherein the white fat looks like a fine mesh in between the red sinewy meat. There is a uniform amount of fat in the meat, so the meat becomes tenderer and feels like it will melt in your mouth. So, if you are ever in the Mie region, make sure to taste Matsusaka beef.
