9:00 am: Depart From Sendai Station on the Loople Sendai

This itinerary takes you around Sendai using the Loople Sendai—a bus for tourists that goes in a loop through major tourist spots in central Sendai. The bus runs every 20 minutes during the week and every 15 minutes on weekends and public holidays. You can board the bus from Sendai Station using the No. 16 Stop in the West Exit Bus Terminal.

I always take advantage of the Loople Sendai when I visit Sendai and find that it is fun just to enjoy the views from the retro bus windows.

9:15 am: Visit Zuihoden, the Resting Place of a Historical Figure (approx. 45 minutes)

Zuihoden is the mausoleum of the feudal lord, Date Masamune (1567 - 1636). Date was the first lord of Sendai and was a key figure behind the prosperity of the Tohoku Region.

International trade brought great prosperity during Date's time, and buildings with elaborate decorations started to be built. Zuihoden was unfortunately lost to fire in 1945, but it has now been reconstructed to its former glory.

Sendai Castle was built by Date Masamune in 1610. The building itself was lost to fire, but there is a stunning view of Sendai City from atop the historic stone walls.

I've visited it myself and was gripped by the beauty of the lavish decorations and jet black lacquer work.

The next stop is Dateno Gyutan Honpo. Take the Loople Sendai (departing at 12:43 pm) for about 25 minutes to reach this destination.
