Nintendo Switch: Top 5 Recommended Games, Including Animal Crossing and Mario!
The Nintendo Switch is incredibly popular all over the world. This article will introduce five Nintendo Switch games, including one that has caught the attention of an Academy Award-winning actress and one that gets you exercising and sweating.
What Is the Nintendo Switch?
The Nintendo Switch (29,980 JPY (excl. tax)) is a gaming console produced by the world-famous gaming company Nintendo. The console is immensely popular worldwide, having sold over 52 million devices as of December 2019. One of the things which set the console apart from the rest is the three modes the console can be played in. "TV Mode" allows the player to connect the console to the television. "Tabletop Mode" allows the player to prop the device up and remove the controllers from the side of the device to play with a friend. "Handheld Mode" allows the player to play on the device with the controllers still attached. The Nintendo Switch is a breakthrough in gaming technology, having merged home gaming consoles and handheld consoles, allowing players to play various types of games in all kinds of environments.
Furthermore, if you sign up for Nintendo Switch Online (payment required), you can connect with friends and other players all over the world, challenging them to battles or helping each other overcome obstacles.
It's a wonderfully fun way to spend time at home, and considering the fact that you can connect with friends online, it's no wonder it's so popular! I often play with the Nintendo Switch with my family as well.
*All the games introduced below are available in multiple languages including Japanese, English, and Chinese.
1. Animal Crossing: New Horizons
You may have seen the game Animal Crossing: New Horizons trending on social media. Apparently, even an Academy Award-winning actress can't get enough of it!
In the game, players move to an uninhabited island and spend their days building furniture, collecting bugs, talking to other animals, and redecorating their homes with different furniture and wallpaper. It allows the player to relax and get a glimpse of slow life.
There is also a sense of realism to the game - for example, when fishing, the type of fish that bite depends on the season, location, and whether the player is fishing in freshwater or saltwater. It was a happy surprise for me since fishing is one of my pastimes! If you register for Nintendo Switch Online, you can also invite friends to your island.

Minecraft is believed to help in developing an interest for programming, and it has educational benefits as well. This game is perfect for those who loved playing with blocks as kids!
Minecraft has two modes that players can choose between depending on how they are looking to enjoy the game. In one, players can utilize their creativity by using different materials to create worlds. In the other, players have to create shelter in order to survive an oncoming attack by enemies.
Perhaps you're considering planting some seeds because you want a wheat field by the lake? Before that, though, you need to plow the soil, dig a ditch, and create some water flow. It's incredibly interesting for players to continue to create and build their own scenarios!
*Price (Japan): 3,960 JPY (excl. tax)
3. Ring Fit Adventure
With this game, you're sure to break a sweat, even in your own home! Ring Fit Adventure is an adventure game that uses fitness techniques to help you battle enemies. It requires two accessories: the Ring-Con accessory (a large plastic ring) and a leg band that goes around your thighs. You can attach the Nintendo Switch controllers to each of these for different challenges!
There have been many reviews floating around social media commenting on how "It's fun but really tough!" By playing a little each day and thinking about how much you're saving on monthly gym fees, it's really a steal! I've been wanting to get this game for a while, but it's been continuously sold out in Japan... Once I get my hands on it, I want to start moving around again!
*Price (Japan): 7,980 JPY (excl. tax, accessories included)
4. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Mario Kart is a racing game series where Nintendo characters ride go-carts and other vehicles in a race against each other. During the race, each player aims to get a hold of items that will help them go faster or hinder their opponents.
The graphics are beautiful, and I love making Shizue—my favorite character from Animal Crossing—go as fast as she can! This game also uses motion controls which can be put into action by tilting the controllers. Grabbing onto the steering wheel accessory (sold separately) can really make you feel like you're driving an actual race car. The rules are very easy to understand even for beginners, and it's a great game to play with friends and family.
*Price (Japan): 5,980 JPY (excl. tax)
5. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
This game is perfect for people who like fighting games, with 74 characters from popular series such as Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, and Final Fantasy available and ready to battle it out.
The excitement you feel when you land a critical hit and send your opponent flying out of frame, trailing smoke behind them, is like no other. You win the fight if you smack your opponent off the stage, but each character has its strength and weaknesses, so take your time and explore all the different elements!
*Price (Japan): 7,200 JPY (excl. tax)
Nintendo Switch is perfect for people who may have a little too much time on their hands while at home. There are many other interesting games available, so be sure to check out the official websites as well.
