Osaka is an area with plenty to enjoy, from sightseeing to cuisine. Here are 5 places where you can enjoy spending a balmy, refreshing spring in Osaka.
1. Night cherry blossoms at Osaka Castle Park
Hanami is an event that you can only enjoy during the spring, and it's fun to do it at Osaka Castle Park, a standard sightseeing area in Osaka. Hanami is the act of going to see the blooming cherry blossoms and often people bring picnics and go in groups to do it. Around the 105.6ha grounds are about 3,000 cherry blossom trees, and in early April the entire park is full of beautiful light pink flowers. In the Nishinomaru Garden there are around 300 trees alone, and you can enjoy the beautiful sight of the trees with Osaka Castle as a backdrop! A particularly recommended sight is Kano Nighter, which is held depending on the condition of the flowers. You can enjoy the gorgeous sight of the cherry blossoms lit up at night.
Entrance fee (Nishinomaru Garden): Adult 200 JPY (350 JPY for adults during Kano Nighter)
2. Pass through the cherry blossoms at the Mint
The road lined with cherry blossoms by the mint is another gorgeous spot for cherry blossoms. It's about 560m long with about 350 trees of 130 varieties. Usually, they are very strict and don't allow the general public to enter the area, but every year during peak cherry blossom season (around mid-April), it's open to the public for a week. It's an event that has continued since 1883, and is a standard spring event for Osaka. After the sun goes down, paper lanterns are lit and you can enjoy night cherry blossoms in the gentle light. It's a one-way path from south to north, so when you try to enter, make sure you're heading to the southern entrance.
*The open period is decided annually in mid-March
3. Take an Osaka sightseeing cruise on the Aqua-Liner
Osaka, often called a city of water, is home to the Aqua-Liner, a water taxi that goes around the heart of the city over the Okawa River. There's also the Sky Walk, a route that goes around the floor outside, and you can enjoy 360 degree panorama while feeling the comfortable spring sunlight and wind.
