When traveling abroad, shops frequented by the locals are just as fun to go to as the famous tourist destinations. So this time, we introduce five supermarket chains in the popular tourist city of Osaka.
This is a supermarket chain that has outlets around the Kansai Region, with 100 in Osaka Prefecture alone. Vegetables picked in the morning are procured daily from local farmers under the concept of "agricultural produce by farmers you know". The seafood is also procured directly from contracted producers.
They offer their own line of products called Mandai Senpin, which includes everything from instant food and snacks to daily necessities, kitchen items and alcohol. These are quality items offered at reasonable prices.
2. Hankyu Oasis
This is a supermarket chain that the Hankyu Hanshin Toho Group, who owns Hankyu Department Store and Hanshin Department Store, operates near stations on Hankyu Railway lines. It is a slightly upscale supermarket chain that adds flavor and richness to their customers' daily lives. In addition to selling quality food that reflects the knowledge and skills of the producers, it disseminates information regarding food. Their own brand, Hankyu no Aji, includes high quality food at reasonable prices, as well as products that offer ideas for changing your lifestyle.
3. Super Tamade
Super Tamade is a supermarket chain that can be spotted by their yellow signs with red writing, stores decorated with neon signs and bright lights lit up late into the night. Some stores are even decorated with firework-like lights on the roof, attracting the attention of foreign tourists. It is famous nationally as one of Osaka's major discount supermarket chains, with three to four items available for 1 JPY* every day. There are 47 stores in Osaka, most of which are open 24 hours a day.
*Customers who purchase more than 1,000 JPY can purchase one of the items for 1 JPY.
4. Supermarket Sunplaza
Supermarket Sunplaza is a chain with more than 30 stores, primarily in the south central area of Osaka Prefecture. It sells high-quality, local and regional products, such as vegetables from a contracted farm in Chihaya-Akasaka Village in Osaka Prefecture and organic vegetables from a farm in Nara Prefecture, with the aim of promoting the local consumption of local produce. It also makes an effort to procure seafood from Osaka Bay at local fishing ports. Products with artificial coloring are excluded as much as possible. Its motto is to offer safe and reliable products at reasonable prices.
5. Kansai Super
Kansai Super is a supermarket chain with shops primarily in Osaka and Kobe Prefectures that sell fresh and tasty products at reasonable prices. The system that they have developed together with producers and manufacturers to maintain freshness is valued as a model for Japanese supermarkets. The freshness and selection of its perishables is particularly impressive. The vegetables are chosen with consideration for the type of soil and fertilizer, and the supermarket works together with cattle farms through the whole process of raising, preparing and delivering beef, so that all of their beef is safe and tasty. There is also a wide selection of deli items, including ones cooked in bonito and seaweed broth, sushi made with fresh fish, and freshly fried tempura.
The supermarkets introduced here are all ones that the local people go to daily. Be sure to stop by while in Osaka to get a sense of how the locals live.
