Budget-friendly! 7 Izakaya in Osaka Where You Can Drink for Less Than 1,000 JPY

There are many izakaya (Japanese gastropub) in Osaka that serve delicious food and drinks at very affordable prices. There is even a term for a drinking place where one can casually drink and eat snacks for just about 1,000 JPY, and it’s “senbero” (a word coined from the terms “sen” which means 1,000 JPY and “bero” which means “drunk”). Don’t you agree that your trip will be more exciting and fun if you know an izakaya where you can drop in at any time in the middle or after you see the sights? So, here are seven recommended “senbero” izakaya in Osaka.

1. Tachinomi Jinbe Umeda Branch

A tachinomi (drinking while standing) izakaya that is committed to the use of fresh fish and seafood, Tachinomi Jinbe offers an extensive menu full of quality dishes. All drinks, except bottled beers, are reasonably priced at 380 JPY (excl. tax). This shop has been getting rave reviews for its offering of side dishes and snacks as cheap as 80 JPY (excl. tax) per plate, including sashimi (prices start at 180 JPY (excl. tax)) and sushi (380 JPY for two pieces (excl. tax)) that use only the freshest fish and seafood delivered directly from the market.

2. TANI Umeda Ohatsu-Tenjin Branch

Located in the Tenjin commercial district, a famous tourist spot in the area, TANI is a tachinomi bar where customers can drink local sake starting lunchtime, with virtually all drinks priced at flat rate of 350 JPY. It has a rich selection of local liquors, and guests also get to enjoy dishes for 350 JPY per plate, center on yakitori (grilled chicken skewer) such as kushiyaki (spit-roasted chicken). There are seats with tables, so these would be recommended if you want to relax and sit while you drink. If you enter this bar before 7:00 pm, then you can order the great-value set of three shots of Japanese sake and snacks for 1,000 JPY.

3. Senbon C’est bon

Senbon C’est bon is a fancy tachinomi wine bar that has become the talk of town in Osaka. Here, the wines are affordable as the prices of wine start at just 250 JPY. You can also order authentic dishes prepared by the French-born chef and served in small dishes for the price of 150 JPY and above. Popular here is the French Oden Daikon Porcini Sauce (French-style oden (ingredients stewed in soy-flavored stock) of daikon radish in porcini mushroom sauce). There are other great-value sets available, such as a set of one glass of wine with three snacks for an unbelievable price of 500 JPY. With these prices, you might unconsciously drink too much wine here.

4. Tokuichi Ogimachi Branch

Tokuichi is a tachinomi bar chain that is popular for its delicious dishes at reasonable prices. It is crowded with people every day, regardless if it’s a weekday or the weekend. Here, you can drink highballs (prices start at 190 JPY), chuhai (cocktails made with shochu) (prices start at 210 JPY), beer (prices start at 380 JPY) and other alcoholic beverages. As for food, it has a wide array of dishes available, centering on fresh seafood dishes. Sashimi and snacks are mainly priced at about 200 JPY – 300 JPY per plate, but there are some items in the 100 JPY level. So, if you have 1,000 JPY, then it would be best to go to this bar and have fun mixing and matching different dishes and drinks here!

4. Tokuichi Ogimachi Branch

5. Takoyaki Sakaba Shin'ya

Shin'ya is an izakaya where you can enjoy Osaka’s specialties such as takoyaki (a dish of ball-shaped batter with octopus pieces inside) and yakisoba (fried noodles), and alcoholic drinks. Here, the prices of alcohols start at 350 JPY (incl. tax). Aside from the takoyaki (300 JPY for six pieces (incl. tax)), there is a wide variety of ala carte dishes such as Surume no Tempura (380 JPY (incl. tax)) (deep-fried cuttlefish in batter), and kushiyaki dishes (prices start at 100 JPY (incl. tax)) available in this bar. You can even have the Otsukarechan Set, which comes with takoyaki, two snacks and a drink, for just a single coin as it only costs 500 JPY! The freshly cooked takoyaki and beer are a perfect match.

5. Takoyaki Sakaba Shin'ya

6. Ginzaya

Ginzaya is a tachinomi bar where you can drink even during daytime as it opens at 2:00 pm. It draws a lot of customers thanks to its reasonable prices, with Kirin Lager and other bottled beers costing only 330 JPY (excl. tax). A la carte dishes are also priced at just around 200 JPY. They serve a variety of dishes that will go well with alcohol, including sashimi, macaroni salad and the classic ham-katsu (fried ham slices). This bar is recommended to beer lovers.

6. Ginzaya

7. Yokagura

Yokagura is a tachinomi bar where you can really get drunk for just 1,000 JPY. Here, the recommended 1,000 Bero Set (1,000 JPY) comes with three drinks and three kinds of side dishes or snacks. It has become a hot topic among big drinkers for its extremely low price. Aside from the popular dishes such as Sunazuri no Shoyu-zuke (280 JPY) (chicken gizzard marinated in soy sauce) and Karaage (380 JPY (deep-fried chicken), this bar also offers daily specials. Now if you get tired of standing, you can always rent a pipe chair for just 50 JPY.

7. Yokagura
