4 Restaurants Where You Can Enjoy Nagasaki’s Famous Shippoku Ryouri, Cuisine Made by Fusing Different Cultures
Nagasaki's famous cuisine, shippoku ryouri, was created due to Nagasaki being a place where international cultures came together. The dishes mix Japanese food with western factors, and it's served Chinese-style in big platters on a round table. Here are some restaurants where you can try it!
This is a veteran shop that opened in 1813. Famous historical figures like Sakamoto Ryoma visited this shop! The interior is made up of 8 rooms, all with their own interior design. There are also small rooms where you can enjoy a meal in a private space.
The shippoku ryouri is made with plenty of wonderful ingredients from sea and land! You can enjoy it starting from 7,776 JPY (incl. tax and service charge) for lunch, and from 12,960 JPY (tax and service charge incl.) for dinner. You can also try the Himeju Shippoku (3,240 JPY (incl. tax)), a number of dishes chosen from the full shippoku ryouri course, at lunch only (reservations required). You'll receive the restaurant's best dishes served beautifully in an jubako, a layered lacquerware box.
2. Nagasaki Shippoku Hamakatsu
Nagasaki Shippoku Hamakatsu is a restaurant where you can have authentic shippoku ryouri at a reasonable price.
The menu consists of 4 courses (5,900 JPY- 8,900 JPY (excl. tax)). Dishes like the rich, melt-in-your-mouth buta no kakuni (pork stewed in a sweet-spicy sauce), sashimi, mame no mitsuni (beans stewed in honey), fried shrimp, and more are lined up on the round table. The Burabura Shippoku (3,900 JPY (excl. tax)) has dishes for one person served on a red board, so you can casually enjoy this cuisine.
There are casual tables and a calming Japanese room in which you can enjoy the Japanese, Chinese, and western fusion of food that you can only find in Nagasaki.
3. Ryotei Harumi
If you want to spend a quiet time surrounded by nature, check out this restaurant. The building is registered as a tangible cultural property since it was built in 1907 as a residence. The interior was renovated while keeping the facade, and it's a very Japanese space made up entirely of private rooms. There are 4 rooms, and the Ike no Ma corner room with a view of the garden and lake is particularly recommended.
The shippoku ryouri comes in four courses, starting at 9,000 JPY per person (excl. tax and service charge). The round table has various kinds of dishes served on it, including sashimi, buta no kakuni, and hatoshi (prawn toast). Please also try the original sake Ginjoshu Hanatsuzumi, which goes well with the sweet flavors in Nagasaki cooking. *Reservations required for these meals.
4. Shiseki Ryotei Kagetsu
This is a traditional Japanese restaurant that is a registered historical landmark, something that is rare in Japan. The building is 370 years old, and is precious because it retains all the features of when it was built. Within the grounds is a Japanese garden of over 2,500 sq.m., and you can enjoy the verdant greenery, the flagstones, and the lake filled with koi fish.
The shippoku ryouri made with various ingredients from both land and sea starts at 15,000 JPY per person (excl. tax and service charge). You can enjoy the Danish dish "basti." It's a baked dish in which you break the lattice-style dough to find soup made from snapping turtle and shark fin inside. You can also enjoy it at a reasonable price starting at 8,000 JPY per person (excl. tax and service charge) at lunch.
When eating shippoku ryouri, you sip a broth called "ohire" before you clink glasses. Afterwards, you can eat the dishes on the table in any order you like! You finish the meal with shiruko, a sweet red bean soup with mochi dumplings.
