[Nagano Prefecture] A Scenic Spot to Visit in the Early Summer in Japan
Kamikochi is a mountain resort on the banks of the beautiful Azusa River. It became famous when the British clergyman, Walter Weston, introduced it in his book.
Kamikochi, which is designated as a special place of scenic beauty and a special national monument by the Japanese government, is a place where you can immerse yourself in the beauty of the grand, untouched nature that surrounds you. Breathe in the clean air and take in the majestic scenery as you step into this incredible landscape.
From Kappa Bridge, which is one of Kamikochi's main spots, you can see breathtaking views of the Hotaka mountain range and Mt. Yake. Below the bridge is Azusa River, with incredibly clear water that lets you see all the way down to the riverbed. Take an invigorating walk from Taisho Pond to Myojin Pond, enjoying the flora and fauna that appear along the way.
[Where to take photos] The area around Kappa Bridge is a popular place to take photos, while the walking path around Taisho Pond is also recommended. Enjoy taking pictures of the views that change dramatically depending on the season, weather and time of day, such as the reflection of the Hotaka mountains on the surface of a misty pond on a summer's morning.
[Best time to take photos] Best season: May - October; Best time of day: 6:00 am - 10:00 pm
Indulge in Kamikochi's Specialty Gourmet Food
You can enjoy a meal with a view of the majestic Hotaka mountains at Kamikochi Shokudo, which is right by Kamikochi Bus Terminal. They pride themselves on their voluminous dishes such as the Shinshu Salmon Bowl (1,350 JPY) with a sweet and melty texture, and Sanzoku-yaki no Marriage Teishoku (1,500 JPY) that will satisfy your hunger after a long walk.
Kamikochi Imperial Hotel, which is about a 10-minute walk from Kamikochi Shokudo, is also recommended. It is one of Japan's iconic mountain resorts that many hikers long to stay at, with a lounge called the Grindelwald that welcomes visitors on a day trip. Enjoy a luxurious time with the hotel's specialty cake set (1,700 JPY) and other tasty items.
