The black pig, which is a specialty of Kagoshima, has earned a reputation for being really delicious. You can enjoy this pork in a variety of different ways. However, the most direct way would be to eat it as "tonkatsu" (pork cutlet). This article introduces some restaurants that offer this dish.
Mansaku is located in Aira, a city that is close to Kagoshima Airport. It specializes in tonkatsu, using only meat from Japanese black pigs that were raised in Kagoshima Prefecture.
The menu is composed solely of dishes that the restaurant boasts itself on. These dishes use special sauces, bread crumbs, cabbage, and rice. This is another restaurant that specializes in dishes that use Japanese black pork. It is only 2 minutes by foot from the west entrance of Chuo Station in Kagoshima. Housed inside a store with an old Japanese home feeling, Juan is a place where you can spend a relaxing time in completely or half-private rooms.
The meat used here comes from carefully fed Japanese black pigs that were raised at Watanabe Berkshire’s pastures. The pork cutlets here have a delicate texture and a certain sweetness that travels all over your mouth. The lunch menu consists of dishes like the Kurobuta Roast Cuts Lunch (starts from 1,566 JPY (incl. tax)). For dinner, you can also select the Kurobuta Tonkatsu Wazen (starts from 2,052 JPY (incl. tax)) or a course meal (starts from 2,808 JPY (incl. tax)).
Roppakutei is a 2-minute walk from Chuo Station in Kagoshima. This restaurant offers dishes made with pork from Japanese black pigs raised at a joint pasture, as well as over 300 types of authentic rice wine.
One signature dish is the Kurobuta Mille-feuille Sauce Cutlet (1,480 JPY (excl. tax)), which is made with 10 thin slices of thigh meat cooked in a mille-feuille style. After being fried, these slices are layered on top of each other. This beloved tonkatsu restaurant is located adjacent to Chuo Station in Kagoshima. It offers the most delicious type of pork, which is made with matured black pigs taken directly from farms that the restaurant has a strong relationship with. This pork has just the right amount of fat, along with the right balance of red meat to go along with it, which is why it is so delicious!
You can avail of juicy black pork cutlet set meals starting from 1,650 JPY (incl. tax), which use thick pork cutlets or fillets. They also offer take-out meals like the Kurobuta Cutlet Sandwich 600 JPY (incl. tax). This sandwich is the perfect treat to eat in a bullet train! It consists of a crunchy pork cutlet placed in-between homemade sandwich bread. They have English, Chinese (simplified and traditional), and Korean menus available.
Hanaichimomme is located about 20 minutes by car from Kirishima Hot Springs. This restaurant offers pork cutlets made with "mythical pig" (“shinwa buta” in Japanese), which is sold only in Kirishima, along with a rich variety of other Japanese dishes.
One suggested dish is the "Mythical Roast Cutlet Namban Teishoku" (1,490 JPY (incl. tax)), which is made with crispy fried pork cutlet and homemade tartar sauce. You should also try out other local dishes, such as the Hamburg Teishoku (1,166 JPY (incl. tax)) and the free-range chicken.
