Just One Hour from Tokyo! How to Enjoy Your Time at Miura Peninsula, Kanagawa, A City by the Sea
There are a lot of hidden hot spots aside from Yokohama and Kamakura in Kanagawa, which is located beside Tokyo. Here are some of the charms of Miura Peninsula, which even locals have yet to discover!
The Jogashima area is in the southernmost part of the Miura Peninsula. It is one of the few islands in the Greater Tokyo Area and is located at an area facing Sagami Bay. Jogashima Park stretches along half the area of the eastern side of the island. The island offers a view of the ocean as well as that of the rock reef zone, narcissus tazetta flowers, pine trees that have altered their form due to the strong wind, as well as other various other plants along the bay.
Furthermore, one of the popular spots in this area would be the Umanose Domon (Horseback Cave), a sea cave found at the close to the southernmost tip of Jogashima. The sea cave got its name from how the waves splashed at the cliff walls to create a hole, while the path above the cave resembles a horseback.
Jogashima Lighthouse Park
At the end of the hiking course at Jogashima, you will come across the Jogashima Lighthouse. This lighthouse is surrounded by a park. As it is located at the southernmost tip of the Miura Island, it has a spectacular view, and if the weather permits it, you may also see Izu Oshima and Mt. Fuji. There's also a retro shopping district at the base with stores that sell fresh seafood.
Enjoy Tuna to the Fullest at Misaki Bay!
You can find a variety of seafood taken from the seaside at Misaki Bay, which serves as a natural seawall at Jogashima. The tuna taken from the open sea is especially popular nationwide.
If you would like a taste of this popular tuna, check out the Miura City Misaki Seafood Regional Wholesale Market located at the second floor. This restaurant offers breakfast starting at 6:00 am, as the workers at the market start their day early. They also serve lunch and dinner. Popular dishes include the tuna sashimi set as well as the marinated tuna which is plated on top of rice.

There are a lot to see from the "fish kingdom" which features giant sharks to the daily performances by the dolphins and sea lions, which you may watch at the closed theater called Fantasium. There's also a chance to see the cute penguins!

The pleasing wind that blows at Miura Peninsula provides the perfect atmosphere to go hiking or go around the cycling course. You may also avail of the services at the bicycle rental shops at major stations. Please give it a go!
