Kagawa Prefecture is full of tourist destinations such as Kotohira-gu and Takamatsu Castle. This time, we introduce four restaurants with carefully selected sake and wonderful food from among izakaya (Japanese pubs) that anyone can enjoy casually.
1. Nikaino Otofuya
This is a restaurant in a red brick building about two minutes away by foot from Kataharamachi Station on Kotoden Kotohira Line. The interior has a calm atmosphere with white wood, and there is a small garden with a bridge adorned with beautiful crimson railing. All seats are in private rooms, and customers are treated to dishes made with an abundance of seasonal ingredients from the land and the sea. The kaiseki course starts at 2,500 JPY (incl. tax) per person. The Onsen Tofu (tofu simmered in hot spring water) from Ureshino Onsen, which is served as part of the course, is a fantastic dish you won't want to miss. There is a great selection of outstanding sake selected from around the country.
This is a cozy restaurant in Kawara-machi in the city of Takamatsu that specializes in the Swiss regional dish of raclette. Cheese and Japanese sake go surprisingly well, and at this restaurant, a selection of sake that goes particularly well with cheese is offered. Enjoy the perfect combination of the melty cheese and sake. Even if you are having sake for the first time, the restaurant staff will give you recommendations so you can find one that suits your tastes.
This is an izakaya that serves traditional Japanese cuisine, and opened in Furubaba-cho in the city of Takamatsu in 2012. At this restaurant, you can enjoy unique Japanese-style dishes made with seasonal ingredients, such as fish from the Seto Inland Sea, which the owner procures himself. The recommended menu item is the Omakase Chef's Selection Course (3,780 JPY and up (incl. tax)). The food is paced in accordance with the speed at which you are eating, and the content changes daily. The Foil-cooked Kawahagi (thread-sail filefish) is a popular dish you won't want to miss. There is always a selection of approximately 15 sake and 30 shochu, all at their best time to be drunk.
Utazu is a town in northern Kagawa Prefecture with many historic shrines, temples and old houses. At this restaurant, located about 3 minutes away from the station by car from, you can enjoy fresh seafood in a Japanese-modern interior, which is filled with the warmth of solid wood. The seafood is all procured directly from the market or picked from the in-house tank, and the vegetables are procured directly from farms within Kagawa Prefecture. The super-fresh sashimi can be ordered as an Omakase of Three Sashimi (1,080 JPY (excl. tax)) or Omakase of Five Sashimi (1,680 JPY (excl. tax)). There is a selection of sake chosen from around the country, so be sure to enjoy it with the fresh seafood.
