A Popular Souvenir These Days! Kamaboko: A Souvenir that is Only Available in Hokkaido’s New Chitose Airport
Blessed with rich marine resources, Hokkaido is a place where fresh seafood is not the only thing that tastes great, but also the processed marine foods. These processed marine foods are so delicious that they are highly recommended for souvenirs. Even kamaboko (seasoned fish paste that is steamed), which has a slightly subdued image, has become quite the trend nowadays. And there is this product available in New Chitose Airport that has become popular among young people.
That famous product is the NORTH MARINE DELI Mini Bacon & Cream Cheese (1,296 JPY for a set of eight pieces), available only at New Chitose Airport, from the veteran kamaboko shop Dezuka Suisan that is headquartered in the Monbetsu area along the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk. It has a base of white fish meat that is mixed with cream cheese and bacon, and then accented by the taste of black pepper. It is perfect as snack not just for beer, but for wine, too!
Most customers who buy this product are in their 30s, with many of those dropping in to purchase this souvenir saying things like, “I got it as souvenir and it was really good, so I came here to buy it for myself” and “I heard from a friend that it is highly recommended, so I’m buying it as a souvenir”. Its stylish appearance, which would make anyone wonder if it’s really kamaboko inside, also seems to be quite fascinating for women customers.
Once you open the box, you will see bite-sized kamaboko pieces that are individually vacuum-packed, so it is perfect for distribution in offices and other places. For families with small children and people who love plain or lightly seasoned food, the NORTH MARINE DELI Hotate (Scallops) & Bacon (1,296 JPY for a set of eight pieces) is definitely recommended.
The appeal of the kamoboko made by Dezuka Suisan is that it lets you enjoy the original flavors of seafood by minimizing the use of starch and seasonings that serve as extenders. The shop at the airport constantly has 11 types of freshly fried types of kamaboko available, and you can buy even just a single piece. They apparently want all customers to savor the delicious taste of freshly made kamaboko, so they do not make too many and they carefully fry each kamaboko. Another great thing about this shop is that they will fry the kamaboko only upon order, so you will get to taste it while it is piping hot.
Among its products, the Hotahota Age (378 JPY) that is shaped like a scallop and the Kani Mayo Ball (270 JPY) are also popular! There is a relaxation space in front of the shop, and you are free to use that if you are hungry and want to eat the kamaboko you just bought.
