The Toppings are Perfect for Sushi Experts! The Conveyor Belt Sushi that Does Not Go Around in Abashiri, Hokkaido
Friends who have traveled to Hokkaido often say that conveyor belt sushi restaurants have such high level of quality anywhere in Hokkaido. With that, we introduce the famous conveyor belt sushi shop that is known for using local ingredients from Okhotsk Abashiri. All the sushi toppings on the list below are toppings that are best in Abashiri.
If you walk for about seven minutes from JR Abashiri Station, heading toward the direction of Kitami via the National Highway No. 39, you will find Kanigen to your left. The term “Abashiri-Ten” (Abashiri Shop) is displayed on the signage in front, but this is a private shop. They say that this shop apparently succeeded and continued to operate a chain shop with the same name from 21 years ago.
All right, let’s order their recommended sushi toppings. First on the list is the Tako Manma that costs 216 JPY for two pieces. So, what is “tako manma”? They are actually the eggs or roe of octopus. At this shop, the roe is marinated in soy sauce and then served in “gunkan” (a sushi that is shaped like a battleship) style. Its robust taste and melt-in-your-mouth texture are typical of delicacies that will make you feel like you are eating uni (sea urchin).
The Masu no Suke that is priced at 432 JPY for two pieces is also called the Kuchiguro Masu (black salmon trout). With its firm fat content, this is a filling sushi that is loaded with the delicious flavors of Okhotsk. Its refined taste makes it an exquisite sushi that is comparable to king salmon.
The Nama Taraba (raw red king crab) that costs 648 JPY for two pieces is a hand-formed sushi that is best eaten in Abashiri. You will enjoy its rich flavors and melt-in-your-mouth texture that will make you think you are actually eating ama-ebi (sweet pink shrimp). It has a luxurious taste that is clearly different from the taste you get from the boiled kind.
The Tsuri Kinki (broadfin thornyhead) that is priced at 648 JPY for two pieces is a high-class fish that can only be caught in certain areas in Hokkaido. It is filled with superb fat that when you bite into it, the flavors of the fat will flood your mouth. This is indeed the king of fish sushi toppings.
The Kani no Fundoshi that costs 162 JPY for two pieces is the meat under the belly of red king crab, blue king crab, ibaragani (stone crab) and other kinds of crab. It a rare kind of sushi that will let you enjoy a topping with a light taste and firm texture.
Aside from the above, the other famous toppings from locally sourced ingredients are the Komochi Kombu (kelp with roe) that costs 432 JPY, the Botan Ebi no Gaishi (Botan shrimp roe) that is priced at 216 JPY, and the Kujira (whale) that will set you back 648 JPY (all come in two pieces). All these sushi toppings are overflowing with the Abashiri appeal. Further, there are many other dishes in the menu of this shop, including the Mini Kaisendon (bowl of rice topped with sashimi), priced at 540 JPY and above, which is famous with women.
While this restaurant is considered a conveyor belt sushi shop, the sushi dishes do not actually rotate on a conveyor belt. Everything has to be ordered and then formed by hand and served fresh here. Note, though, that during the busy season from mid-July through mid-September, a system will be enforced that will only allow customers to stay for 40-60 minutes before another batch of customers come in to take their place. It would be best to inquire in advance before you visit.
