This is a tempura restaurant that requires reservations and only offers omakase chef's selection courses (10,000 JPY and up). It changes the temperature of the oil based on the ingredients that have been carefully selected for quality, so that customers can enjoy tempura with an elegant flavor. The light and crunchy tempura goes well with sake and wine. The courses consist of fabulous food from start to end, including the tempura as well as the tempura chazuke (in which tea is poured over rice) or tendon tempura bowl that is served afterwards, the dessert, and the house blended herbal tea of Japanese plants. Make a reservation at least one day in advance and have a relaxing meal of fabulous food.
2. Ebiten Main Store
This is a tempura restaurant that was established in 1950 and has a welcoming yet quiet atmosphere. Here, you can enjoy tempura bowls and set menus with tempura made with Hokkaido ingredients, such as fresh seafood and vegetables, at reasonable prices. A popular menu item is the Botan Shrimp Tempura Bowl (3,000 JPY (incl. tax)) with botan shrimp stacked so high they look like they are going to spill out. Only a limited number is available each day, so be sure to get there early. There are also sets such as the Tendon Tempura Bowl Set (with miso soup, pickles and a small plate) (1,000 JPY (incl. tax)) and Lunch Tempura Teishoku Set (includes 2 shrimp, 2 fish, 3 vegetables, rice, miso soup, and pickles) (1,100 JPY (incl. tax)). The restaurant is convenient for those who want to drop in on their own.
This is a restaurant where you can have tempura made by the owner who has experience as a chef of French cuisine. All the ingredients, including the seafood, vegetables, and condiments, are personally selected by the chef from around the country so that customers can always enjoy the flavors of seasonal ingredients. The tempura here is distinguished by a light, flaky texture. There are non-tempura dishes and dessert as well, including hand-made soba noodles. Seating is limited to the counter with eight seats so that the chef can pay attention to each guest. You can enjoy freshly-fried tempura that is made right in front of you. The menu is the Seasonal Tempura Course (12 pieces of seasonal tempura, small dish, sashimi, rice or noodle, dessert for 11,000 JPY (excl. tax)). Reservations required.
This is a place where you can enjoy tempura at reasonable prices in a relaxing atmosphere. At the counter, the chefs will watch your progress and serve you freshly fried tempura at just the right timing. The restaurant also has some zashiki seating so you can have a relaxing semi-private dining experience as well. In addition to the tempura sauce, they have matcha green tea salt, yuzu citrus salt, plum salt, sansho pepper salt, and rock salt so you can enjoy various flavors. Menu items include the Kakiage Bowl (950 JPY (incl. tax)), Lunch Teishoku Set (1,300 JPY (incl. tax)) and Tempura Teishoku Set (1,500 JPY (incl. tax)).
5. Tsunahachi Sapporo Susukino Branch
This is a branch of the tempura restaurant, Tsunahachi, that was established in Shinjuku in 1924. It is a place where you can experience the tempura-making skills and dedication to quality that has been developed over more than 90 years. The tempura made with 100% specially-ordered Taihaku sesame oil is crisp and flaky. They can be eaten with a variety of seasoning including rock salt, wasabi salt, yukari shiso salt, kombu seaweed salt, and tempura sauce. Have a relaxing evening with some sake to go with the fabulous tempura and other dishes. There are three course menus: Nagi (5,400 JPY (incl. tax)), Asanagi (8,640 JPY (incl. tax)), and Yunagi (10,800 JPY (incl. tax)). You can also order tempura individually (432 JPY and up).
