Five Recommended Sushi Bars in Hiroshima

Hiroshima, which faces the Seto Inland Sea, has an abundance of fresh and tasty seafood. So when you're there, you'll definitely want to have some sushi! Here are five recommendations from among the many sushi bars in Hiroshima.

1. Sakamotoya Ichibe

This is a sushi bar where you can enjoy sushi made with natural seafood from the Seto Inland Sea and à la carte dishes. They serve a variety of alcohol, including sake, wine, and shochu, and the atmosphere is of a place where you can relax and enjoy sushi and drinks. You can order individual dishes, but if it is your first time, it is recommended to reserve one of the two courses on offer: the Ichibe no Omakase Course (5,000 JPY (excl. tax) and up)) that includes a variety of dishes and the Ichibe no Sushi Course (5,000 JPY (excl. tax) and up) that focuses on sushi. The restaurant is also known for the sushi chefs wearing the chonmage hairstyle from the Edo period.

2. Hitoshi

This is one of Hiroshima's leading luxury sushi restaurants. They are particular about the sushi ingredients and procure carefully selected seafood from the Seto Inland Sea and from Nagasaki and Hakata. The appetizers and dishes served as part of the course are very refined. Before the sushi is served you'll want to enjoy how these dishes and sake complement each other. At night, they offer omakase courses that start from 12,000 JPY (excl. tax) and at lunch, they offer a nigirizushi course that includes eight pieces of sushi starting at 3,000 JPY (excl. tax). The sushi made to bring out the flavors of the ingredients, such as squid, shrimp, and plump anago eel, are outstanding.

3. Uenozushi

This is a sushi bar that is famous for its Meibutsu Iso-Anago, which has been popular for more than thirty years. It has a counter and zashiki-style seating on tatami mats and is a restaurant with a comforting, old-school feel. The Meibutsu Iso-Anago (1,296 JPY (incl. tax) which is also available for takeout, is so popular about 80% of the people who come to this restaurant order it. It is a rolled sushi with plump grilled anago eel marinated in a house sauce, shredded kombu seaweed, and shiso. Nigirizushi sets are reasonably priced at 1,404 JPY (incl. tax) for the "jo" (superior) and 1,836 JPY (incl. tax) for the "tokujo" (extra special). This restaurant is recommended for those who want to enjoy sushi and sashimi made with local ingredients from the Seto Inland Sea that the owner procures himself at the market every day, as well as à la carte dishes and a wide selection of local Hiroshima sake.

3. Uenozushi

This is a long-established sushi bar famous in Hiroshima. The old-school counter has a case with a wide selection of fresh ingredients from Hiroshima, and the sushi made by veteran sushi chefs are highly regarded by sushi connoisseurs. The nigirizushi made with anago eel can be enjoyed either with a sauce or with salt, and there is a wide selection of à la carte dishes. There are tastes unique to this restaurant, such as the Hiroshima specialty, small sardine sashimi, which have a fabulous texture that seems to melt in your mouth, an "unihoren" dish that combines uni sea urchins and stir-fried spinach, and scallion sprout sushi. Visit this restaurant and you are sure to discover an outstanding dish that will amaze you. Budget between 8,000 JPY and 10,000 JPY.

5. Sushitatsu Midorii Main Restaurant

Midorii is the main branch of Sushitatsu, a sushi-go-round bar. It offers nigirizushi, sushi rolls, battleship rolls, and a variety of à la carte dishes. The balance between the fresh seafood from the waters near Hiroshima and the shari rice made into sushi by veteran sushi chefs is perfect. It is popular among locals as a place to casually enjoy authentic, high-quality sushi. The sushi starts at 120 JPY (excl. tax) a plate. Some recommendations are the 3-piece sushi set that has three different sushi pieces on a plate, nigirizushi with ingredients that have been seared to add fragrance, and nigirizushi eaten with salt.
