Six beautiful rivers flow through Hiroshima, known as the City of Water. Here you can make use of pleasure cruises and aquatic taxis to get around the city, which is a rarity among large cities even in Japan. Streetcars also run through the city of Hiroshima, making for a transit network that is also great for sightseeing. Heritage site; the Atomic Bomb Dome at Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park; Hiroshima Castle; and the Shukkei-en garden. We also recommend enjoying some cycling on the Nishiseto Expressway, stopping by Okunoshima (also known as "Rabbit Island") on the way to or from Onomichi or Kure, and experiencing the delights of nature with a trip to the Seto Inland Sea area.
After enjoying the sights, be sure to get your fill of the local cuisine! Offerings include Hiroshima-yaki (Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki, a savory pancake with a variety of toppings; compared to Osaka-style okonomiyaki, the Hiroshima style is made with a thinner batter, and also features lots of cabbage, fried noodles, and a unique, slightly sweet sauce), as well as fresh oysters and anago-meshi (rice topped with broiled eel) from the Inland Sea. For souvenirs, we recommend momiji manju (a sweet steamed bun in the shape of a maple leaf) and a bottle of sake.
