As Christmas approaches, the atmosphere completely changes at Marunouchi and Yaesu, which are two massive districts that are located on the west and east sides of Tokyo Station, respectively. These areas transform into romantic towns enveloped in whimsical illuminations during the holidays. This year, make sure to check out these illumination spots that represent Tokyo!

Witness Marunouchi’s Simple Illumination! One of the Best Night Views in Japan

Marunouchi Illumination 2017, which will mark its 16th anniversary this year, will be held from November 9, 2017 (Thursday) till February 18, 2018 (Sunday). The approximately 1.2km-long Marunouchi Naka-dori, which is lined by branded shops, will be lit up in beautiful colors emanating from around 930,000 light bulbs, creating a festive townscape. Aside from the lights, many winter attractions that are the pride of Marunouchi are also scheduled, including the Christmas tree lighting ceremony, holiday decorations, and various events!

Marvel at Innovative Designs Depicting the Culture of the Townspeople

Running under the theme of “Edo Neo-Modernism”, TOKYO ILLUMILIA 2017 – 2018 will be held from November 29, 2017 (Wednesday) to February 14, 2018 (Wednesday). The whole area, including Nihombashi Yaesu Sakura-dori, will feature a public square monument with an Edo kiriko (Edo-style cut glass) design that has a modern twist, as well as decorations on streetlights that are inspired by checked patterns. During this event, the streets will be painted in vivid colors.

Experience a Magical Silver World

At the WHITE KITTE event that will be held at KITTE from November 22nd (Wednesday) to December 25th (Monday), the pure white tree that has become a common attraction at this event will also appear this year. Through the combination of various beautiful decorations that will make it look like snow has piled on a real fir tree, the area will be filled with a magical ambiance that resembles winter in Northern Europe. The time when the lights are switched on, along with other event details, are still not available, but there is no doubt that the illumination that they have planned will brighten the mood!

Gaze at the Glow from Flowers and Lights Engulfing the Front of Tokyo Station

Tokyo Michi Terrace 2017 is an event that is held with the fervent prayer of brightly illuminating the future (shining light on the unknown). The event theme for this year will be “Celebration”, and it will be held from December 24th (Sunday) to December 28th (Thursday). The famous flower artist, Nicholai Bergmann, will be commissioned to produce the event, with the streets slated to be adorned and lit up by flowers and lights.
