Now a Major Evening Tourist Site! Top Three Places for the Shinjuku Golden Gai First-Timer

Shinjuku Golden Gai, Tokyo's leading "nomiya yokocho" (alleyways full of bars) with approximately 280 restaurants and bars, is currently a huge hit. The number of foreign visitors has increased dramatically over the last few years, and it is now a major Tokyo evening tourist attraction. We introduce three recommended spots for those who have not yet been to Golden Gai.

<1> Good For Eating and Drinking! The Middle Eastern Lounge Bar, Krishuna

Krishuna has an exotic interior with bright, red walls and Moroccan lamps and cushions. It has a full menu of ethnic dishes as well as lounge seating, which is unusual in Golden Gai, so is convenient for all occasions from dinner to a party with friends.

The bar is on the second floor of a building and is surprisingly spacious despite its small entrance. Their bellydance performances starting at 9:30 pm on Tuesdays and the last Wednesday of the month and tarot reading on Tuesdays and Thursdays are popular, so reservations are recommended.

The bar's original Couscous Paella (950 JPY), with couscous instead of rice. The couscous that has soaked up the flavors of the chicken, shrimp and tomato sauce is fabulous.

Indie Chai (1,000 JPY) with cardamon or cinnamon infused vodka and tea liquor. It is a cocktail with the aroma of spices.

<2> "red." For Coffee and Hot Dogs in an American-Style Room

"Red." is a bar full of goods reminiscent of an American general goods store. It has a welcoming atmosphere created by the small space typical of Golden Gai and the friendly staff. There is a loft with a sofa that feels like an attic. One of their specialties is the coffee roasted by a famous Shinjuku coffee shop. To enter the shop, go up a sharp staircase to the second floor.

The hot dogs have Johnsonville sausages from the US sandwiched in buns made by Mineya in Shinjuku, famous in the hamburger industry. Pictured is the Regular (700 JPY) and super spicy Red Hot (800 JPY).

The Coffee-wari (700 JPY) is iced coffee made by being cold-brewed for 6-8 hours mixed with shochu. It is served in an American Mason jar.

<3>Epitaph Curry, A New Wave Curry Sure to Become a Hit

Epitaph Curry opened on November 16, 2016 as the day-time version of Kangaroo Court Decision, a bar that offers a selection of gins from various countries. The bar has studied and serves the relatively unknown curry from Goa in southern India so you can enjoy the tastes made from whole spices. It has a handwritten sign and the door is open so it is welcoming to newcomers.

A combination of two curries (1,000 JPY) including Kerala Chicken from southern India and Pork Vindaloo, a light dish with a refreshing sourness from Goa. Gin, from a selection of 70 types including rare domestic ones, is available from 600 JPY.
