A Major Tokyo Tourist Destination! A Complete Guide to the Famous Tokyo Tower

Tokyo Tower has been the famous symbol of Tokyo for a really long time now. Did you know, though, that aside from marveling at the picturesque view from the observation deck, there are many other fun ways to enjoy this place? Read on and learn about the charms of Tokyo Tower.

What is Tokyo Tower?

Tokyo Tower is a comprehensive broadcasting tower standing 333m above the ground that was opened in 1958. It is comprised of the Main Observatory at the 150m level, the Special Observatory at 250m, and the commercial facility, FOOT TOWN, at the base of the tower. From the observation deck on the tower, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the vast landscape of Tokyo – one of the leading metropolitan areas in the world.

Enjoy Views of the Metropolis from the Observation Deck

Here are the spots you should check out when you’re at Tokyo Tower.

First, let’s talk about the two observation decks. Both decks are under renovation as of 2017, in preparation for the 60th anniversary of the tower in December 2018. While the Special Observatory is closed, the Main Observatory is open for business as usual. However, four sides on the north, south, east, and west are being renovated, starting from the north side, so note that the area that can be toured may change depending on the construction phase.
Guests usually go up to the Main Observatory using the elevators, but going via the external staircase is also recommended, as you can view the landscape below while walking up. This staircase has around 600 steps. It will also make for some good exercise!

Admission fee for the Main Observatory:
Adult (senior high school students or older): 900 JPY
Child (elementary and junior high school students): 500 JPY
Toddlers (4 years old or older): 400 JPY

Next, let’s go to FOOT TOWN – the commercial complex found at the base of Tokyo Tower. It houses amusement facilities like an aquarium with around 900 beautiful and rare fish from around the world, and a permanent theme park for the famous animated series, ONE PIECE. It also has various cafes and restaurants, and rows of shops selling souvenirs and other goods. You can definitely have a whole day of fun here!

If you’re hungry, then the casual restaurant, TOWER’S DINER, is highly recommended. Apart from the famous 333g Ribeye Steak (3,333 JPY (incl. tax)) and 333g Tegone Hamburger (1,800 JPY (incl. tax)) – both of whose names came from the 333m height of Tokyo Tower, there is also a wide variety of dishes on the menu, such as healthy set meals. It is also famous for its extensive list of drinks, with guests raving about its red wine and Japanese sake that are only available at Tokyo Tower. Wi-Fi is free throughout this vast establishment, so you can relax and unwind in peace.
