Outstanding Italian Foods Converge in Tokyo Station! Large Marketplace With Restaurants Opens

On August 30, EATALY GRANSTA MARUNOUCHI opened in GRANSTA, a commercial building in Tokyo Station. This is a new type of Italian marketplace where you can eat, buy, and learn about authentic Italian food.

EATALY is a food market that combines stores that sell Italian ingredients and restaurants together. It started in Torino, Italy in 2007, and now has 38 locations around the world. The GRANSTA location is the second in Japan, following the one in Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi. With seating for 110 people and a floorspace of 450 sq.m, it is one of the largest shops in Japan.

Quality Produce Carefully Selected From Around Italy

At the opening party, EATALY Asia Pacific's President and CEO, Hiroto Motai, commented that "EATALY is a place where one can have tasty food in a fun environment full of high-quality Italian produce.” He also explained that "in Italy, food that has been made using traditional methods by small and medium-size producers are considered to be quality products."

The EATALY in GRANSTA MARUNOUCHI also has a wide range of products that have been carefully selected from more than 2,000 small and medium-size producers across Italy by dedicated EATALY buyers, and serves Italian dishes made with them. The market area sells more than 600 different types of items such as pasta, prosciutto, cheese, and more than 150 different wines.

At the opening party, a presentation was given in which the king of Italian cheeses, Parmigiano Reggiano, was deconstructed. The Parmigiano Reggiano used was made with 640 liters of fresh milk and weighed 40kg.

Parmigiano Reggiano is usually ripened for at least 12 months, but this one was ripened for 26 months, giving it an abundance of amino acid crystals, which are the source of umami flavors. The gritty texture of the cheese is not salt, but amino acid crystals. The freshly shaved Parmigiano Reggiano that was deconstructed before the guests' eyes had an exceptional scent and taste, with a rich aroma and complex umami flavor that fills the mouth.

Only Here in Japan! Demonstration and Sale of Traditional Sicilian Sweets

This EATALY has a variety of convenient services unique to its location within Tokyo Station. The selection of Italian dishes and drinks that can be enjoyed on-site is extensive. In addition to freshly baked pizza, pasta and gelato, they perform cannoli-making demonstration and sale shows, which have never been done in Japan before.

Cannoli is a traditional Sicilian sweet that is basically tube-shaped fried pastry dough shells filled with ricotta cheese cream. The combination of the crunchy pastry with the rich and smooth ricotta cheese cream is outstanding. EATALY offers Cannoli Classic and Cannoli Chocolate Cream (540 JPY/each) with a selection of five toppings, including pistachio and orange peel. It's great when you want a bite of something sweet, and it is also available as a take-away gift.

EATALY also has a cafe where espresso drinks made by the established Italian coffee brand, Vergnano, is served. It meets a variety of needs by serving morning coffees, lunch, dinner, and even wines to end the day with.

There will also be educational events such as tastings of food and wine with wine and cheese producers, as well as seminars and cooking classes.

The marketplace is chock full of "things that taste good" from Italy. It is exciting just being there! Start by paying a visit to experience its charm.
