Tenugui hand towels are versatile towels that can be used as handkerchiefs, scarves, or to wrap things in. They have become quite the fad thanks partly to the release of tenugui with trendy designs. Here are five recommended shops to buy tenugui!

1. Kamawanu Daikanyama Store

One of the best known fancy tenugui brands is Kamawanu. It has shops not only in Japan, but in numerous countries around the world, and its flagship store is in Daikanyama. The store has a selection of approximately 200 different patterns of tenugui at any given time.
In addition to traditional patterns, Kamawanu offers numerous fun patterns including ones inspired by Nordic designs. It also offers many limited-offer designs, such as seasonal ones, and continues to charm fans in Japan and abroad.

2. Chidoriya

Chidoriya is a tenugui shop in Nihonbashi. Chidoriya is dedicated to preserving the culture handed down from the Edo Period, and sells only tenugui dyed through a traditional process called "chusen." This is a process that requires the skills of experienced artisans and is recognized as a traditional craft. It is characterized by delicate color tones and unique texture.
The store sells a wide selection of tenugui of about 1,800 patterns. Those depicting ukiyo-e paintings, seasonal flowers, and shuriken are particularly popular among foreign visitors. Chidoriya also sells furoshiki wrapping cloths, brooms, and Japanese accessory items.

This shop offers a selection of products chosen under the concept of "superior Japanese items handmade by artisans" including tenugui made through the traditional "chusen" method, brightly colored furoshiki wrapping cloths with traditional patterns, and Japanese tea packaged in soft kinchaku bags.
Tenugui depicting iconic Japanese motifs, such as Mt. Fuji and cherry blossoms, are favored by foreign tourists. Those that represent a picture when spread out and can be hung as decoration are particularly popular. Be sure to check them out at the store.

This shop in Asakusa was founded back in 1907.
It offers tenugui carefully made in its own workshop of quality material that is both strong and soft, that are, at 100cm, slightly longer than the standard. Most are individually hand dyed by skilled artisans using a traditional technique called "tenassen." They are distinguished by their deep yet bright colors and elaborate designs.
In addition to classic designs, such as of Mt. Fuji, cute patterns, such as of cats, are popular among foreign tourists. The shop also sells accessories, clothing, and folding fans made from tenugui.

5. Mamegui GRANSTA Branch

Mamegui is another brand created by Kamawanu, introduced earlier. While standard Kamawanu tenugui are approximately 33cm×90cm, Mamegui tenugui are approximately 27cm×27cm - small enough to fit in your hands. The GRANSTA store has approximately 200 different patterns at any given time.
In addition, approximately 30 different sweets and teas are sold in the store, and if you buy any of them, they will wrap it in one of the Mamegui you purchased! These cute Mamegui are perfect as souvenirs, so be sure to stop in and see for yourself.
