Three Outstanding Curries Available Only in Tokyo

Curry rice has evolved over the years to become one of Japan's de facto national dishes. There is a wide variety available today, such as ones with rich sauces that have been simmered till the ingredients melt away, others with unique flavors made by adding multiple spices, and still others with special toppings that become the focal point of the dish. This article introduces outstanding and unique curries that cannot be replicated at home.

Curry Yoshida

Curry Yoshida serves fantastic curries made with no artificial flavoring or additives. There are two curry sauces - one mild and one spicy - that can be mixed to achieve your desired spiciness. The recommended item is the Curry MIX Regular (800 JPY) with additional toppings of pork (250 JPY), keema (350 JPY), and Chinese achar (150 JPY). Many people love it for its spiciness that kicks in after tasting the sweetness of the vegetables. Keep in mind that there are a few rules to follow when eating here!

Kasei Curry

Kasei Curry is popular for its original sauce, which is made with secret spices and a concentration of umami. Unusual meats like kangaroo and horse are also added to it. The curry is spicy yet gentle and goes well with the meat. The Sika Curry (1,080 JPY) is made with Hokkaido deer that has been carefully prepped and has no gamey smell. It has been thoroughly cooked and has plenty of umami. Add the Kusa Topping (150 JPY) for additional spinach sautéed in butter.

Kasei Curry

This is a restaurant with the retro feel of an old-school Japanese coffee shop. It serves a dark curry that has been popular for years. The sauce – developed through more than five years of research – is so thoroughly simmered that there is no visible sign of any meats or vegetables. It is rich yet gentle on the stomach. The specialty Hamburg Curry (1,500 JPY) has beef, pork and vegetables melted in to create the umami flavor and viscosity. There are many who swear by the voluminous hamburg (hamburger steak), which is made with a mixture of beef and pork.

These outstanding curries are great for maintaining your stamina to survive the oncoming hot Tokyo summer.
