World Famous Craft Beer Company Opens a Bar in Shibuya

On Thursday, July 20, 2017, Far Yeast Brewing Co., which sells craft beer such as KAGUA and Far Yeast, enjoyed not just in Japan but also in 14 countries around the world including the US, Hong Kong, and European countries, opened Far Yeast Tokyo - Craft Beer & Bao in Shibuya 2-chome.

This beer bar is the talk of the town that was realized by soliciting funds through the crowdfunding site, Makuake, and attracting three times the targeted amount in three days. One of the reasons for the successful funding is that it is run by Discovery Inc., which manages SHOKKAN and "eat", which were selected for the 2015 Michelin Bib Gourmand list for creative foods such as bao, which is served with the craft beer, thus attracting interest both among the general public and people involved in the food business. The special, high returns also caught people's eyes. The crowdfunding started at 4,000 JPY, that included a gift of six bottles of Far Yeast. Investments of 8,000 JPY and over came with a six-month pass to get one free glass of beer. There were other unique benefits such as a ticket to be the manager for a day at 100,000 JPY and the creation of a custom beer at 3.6 million JPY. It appears that in this time of increasing recognition of craft beer, special treatment is the next big thing.

The bar accommodates 40 with spots to stand at and counter seating and has a cozy feel.

The new bar serves about 10 craft beers, including Tokyo White and KAGUA Blanc. The lineup is designed so that customers can thoroughly enjoy craft beer with a variety of different flavors. The staff are all beer lovers who are knowledgeable about craft beer, so craft beer novices can ask them for help to select the right beer. There are other drinks, such as a house coffee and lemon sour.

The specialty food item to be enjoyed with the craft beer is the bao that is popular in London and New York. Bao are like Asian hamburgers with different ingredients sandwiched in Chinese buns. This new bar offers Japanese-style bao with ingredients such as kakiage (tempura with different ingredients) and steamed chicken.

The bao served here come on plump and chewy buns steamed on site. Bao is likely to become popular in Japan. Chef Ezaki, who was head chef at SHOKKAN and "eat", which were selected for the 2015 Michelin Bib Gourmand list, produces the food menu here. In addition to bao, he plans to introduce food made with seasonal ingredients including tempura, chips, and shumai dumplings.

Far Yeast Tokyo - Craft Beer & Bao has a full selection of creative food items that go well with craft beer. Why not stop by on your way home from work to have a quick craft beer.
