Budget-friendly! 7 Recommended Izakaya Where You Can Drink For 1,000 JPY or less in Tokyo

There are plenty of izakaya (Japanese gastropubs) in Tokyo where you can drink and have snacks for 1,000 JPY or less. Here are 7 to consider checking out.

1. Iseya Sohonten

This is a famous yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) restaurant in Kichijoji that's always busy. It opens starting from lunch, so you can easily drop by. Yakitori costs 80 JPY a skewer, and the 4-piece set of mixed yakitori made of different chicken cuts is popular. Shochu starts at 250 JPY, and other drinks like sake, beer, and sours start from 280 JPY. If you have 1,000JPY, then you can enjoy plenty of drinks and hot yakitori.

This is a large izakaya in Shimbashi, a neighborhood often frequented by businessmen. They're very budget-friendly with most drinks like sake, shochu, and whiskey (but not beer), as well as food costing around 300 JPY. The restaurant's atmosphere is that of the Showa period (1926-1989), and it's always crowded so you may have to share a table with strangers. There are plenty of dishes that go great with liquor, including the famous ham-katsu (deep fried ham cutlet), which is thick and voluminous, the menchikatsu (deep fried cutlet made of ground meat) with the sweetness of onions and a delicious curry flavor, and fresh sashimi.

It's a self-service place, so you can take what you want to eat and order your drinks at the same counter. It's so cheap that it's become a hot topic. Since it gets crowded, you can only be there for 2 hours, and groups of more than 5 people aren't allowed in.
