Shikoku is surrounded by the Seto Inland Sea and the Pacific Ocean, so there are plenty of restaurants offering delicious seafood on the island. Here are 5 you should consider visiting.
1. Hokuroya (Kagawa)
This is a restaurant where you can eat fresh sashimi made from living fish taken directly from tanks inside the shop or seasonal fish from the Seto Inland Sea bought fresh from the market. The seasonal fish is chosen via the trained eye of the chef and used in the reasonably priced Daily Sashimi Set (starting at 1,080 JPY (excl. tax) for 3 pieces). The fresh sashimi is sweet and tender, so you can enjoy both the flavor and texture. They have over 100 types of alcohol available, centering around local sake from Shikoku, shochu, and wine. The interior is decorated in a Japanese modern style, so please relax and enjoy the seafood from the Seto Inland Sea.
2. Kai (Kagawa)
This is a Japanese restaurant that uses seasonal ingredients. The plating of the wild local fish has a seasonal appearance that is so beautiful you'll want to post it on social media. This restaurant is great for dates or special occasions. Try the kaiseki course (by reservation only; starting at 5,400 JPY). The Lunch Special Mini Kaiseki (by reservation only; 2,160 JPY) is only available for lunch, but you can casually enjoy a kaiseki course meal at a reasonable price. Please enjoy a luxurious meal in this restaurant, which only seats 19.
3. Toto Ichiban Arata (Tokushima)
If you want delicious seafood near Tokushima Station, this is the place for you! Their seafood is shipped directly from the port, and you can find rare grilled items like blackthroat seaperch (1,880 JPY (excl. tax)) or Japanese blue fish (720 JPY (excl. tax)). The recommendation is the Taimeshi (by reservation only; 1,260 JPY), made with wild sea bream from Naruto that's cooked along with rice in a clay pot. The broth that is made from the fish gives the rice a delicious flavor. You can enjoy other Tokushima delicacies other than seafood, such as Awa brand beef and Awa-odori brand chicken. Their shop curtains are made using a traditional dyeing technique from Tokushima called aizome, and are the restaurant's landmark.
4. Izakanaya Amimoto (Ehime)
This is a shop managed by fishermen with a huge shrimp on the sign as its landmark. Of course they offer seasonal fish, but they also have rare fish that aren't found in the markets. The mackerel sashimi served as the full fish (2,800 JPY (excl. tax)) is so popular that most people order it. There are about 1,000 fish swimming in the shop's aquariums on a regular basis, so this is the place to enjoy the freshest fish possible. Since it's managed by a fishery, it's also reasonably priced. You can enjoy the interior decorations of the aquariums and the lanterns hanging from the ceiling that make it seem like a fisherman's hut.
5. Izariya (Kochi)
This is a popular restaurant that's always packed with reservations tucked away near Kochi Station. You can enjoy their menu that's made up of sashimi is made only from seafood shipped directly from Kochi ports as well as original dishes. The first floor is counter seats and only has the Omakase (starting at 4,000 JPY) course in which the chef chooses what to serve. The 2nd floor is like an izakaya (Japanese gastropub) where you can enjoy both ala carte and course meals. Both floors offer high-quality meals at reasonable prices. Kochi's most famous fish, skipjack tuna, is especially popular. Please enjoy it with some local sake from Kochi.
These popular restaurants all offer fresh seafood in various delicious ways. Please enjoy these dishes and local fish that you can only have because you are in Shikoku.
