The Tohoku region's main city, Sendai, has so many tasty foods! Here are five Sendai specialty foods that are perfect to take home as souvenirs.

1. Kasho Sanzen's Hagi no Tsuki

This is a sweet made by wrapping a specially made custard cream with a castella sponge cake. The cream that is rich but has a fresh finish is one of its appeals. Approximately 100,000 of this very popular product is made and sold every day. It can be eaten at room temperature or cold, and some fans say they are good frozen and crunchy too. These Hagi no Tsuki, which can be enjoyed at room temperature, refrigerated or frozen, are made by Kasho Sanzen, which was established in 1947. It is sold in 43 shops across Miyagi, including ones in department stores, airports, and service areas, so be sure to check them out.

2. Shiromatsuga Monaka Honpo's Shiromatsuga Monaka

Monaka are Japanese sweets made by wrapping an filling in a wafer made with mochi rice. This is a monaka made by Shiromatsuga Monaka Honpo, which was established in 1932. The wafer is made with Miyakogane, considered to be the king of mochi rice. Its appeal is the flakey texture and fragrant aroma. The filling is made only with ingredients from Hokkaido since the time of establishment. There are four favors, including chestnut, dainagon red beans, sesame, and ofuku beans. They come in a variety of sizes, with the smallest being 3cm square and the largest, 7cm square. You can choose the size and flavors depending on whom you are gifting them to. They are available in 17 locations throughout Miyagi, including in S-PAL Sendai, right beside Sendai Station.

3. Igeta's Kikufuku

This is a sweet that is made with a blend of Japanese and Western styles by Igeta, a tea shop established in 1920. The appeal of this sweet is the mochi that stays soft when cold, and the exquisite combination of an filling and cream. The an filling is made with carefully selected azuki beans from Hokkaido, and the mochi rice is Miyakogane, the king of mochi rice also used for Shiromatsuga Monaka. There are four flavors: matcha green tea cream, fresh cream, zunda fresh cream, and hojicha tea fresh cream. In a testament to the shop's dedication to quality, the matcha and hojicha teas are procured from Kyoto, and the ingredients for zunda (a paste made by mashing edamame or fava beans) are procured from Yamagata. You must try it if you love mochi sweets. It is sold in 36 shops across Miyagi, including one in Sendai Station.

4. Abe Kamabokoten's Sasa Kamaboko

Kamaboko is a Japanese food made with surimi minced fish. It has a long history, and is said to have been documented for the first time in 1115. The Sendai specialty is Sasa Kamaboko, a grilled kamaboko in the form of sasa bamboo grass. Abe Kamabokoten, which has been making sasa kamaboko since 1935, is dedicated to making quality kamaboko with no preservatives and with high grade surimi minced fish with very little fish intestines or skin. Its main distinguishing feature is the appetizing aroma of the grilled kamaboko that is like that of grilled fish. It is an aroma that is achieved only by choosing the best ingredients. The shop also sells a variety of kamaboko, including ones with cream cheese and salami. They are sold in 35 stores around Miyagi.

5. Smoked Beef Tongue by Rikyu

Grilled Beef Tongue was born in Sendai in 1945. The food culture around grilled beef tongue grew since then, and Rikyu was established in 1988. At Rikyu, the entire process of preparing beef tongue is by hand. Just the softest part of beef tongue is cut out with knives that are taken care of every day, and cut on both sides so they are easy to chew. To finish, they are flavored with hand sprinkled salt and aged. The traditional taste that was achieved as a result of trial and error continues to be a favorite Sendai specialty. Four flavors - salt, pepper, wasabi, and soy sauce - can be purchased in the store. They go well with daily meals, such as salads and stir fries, so you can purchase them as gifts for yourself! They are available in 29 stores around the prefecture, including Sendai Station.
