Some of the people I met in Okinawa didn’t just distinguish between “Okinawa” and “the mainland”—they distinguished between “Okinawa” and “Japan.” I have to say, I was surprised at the extent to which Okinawa felt like its own country! When it comes to history and geography, Okinawa’s pretty far removed from the mainland, huh?
