Trending Activities and Bestselling Items in Japan Due to the Coronavirus

The coronavirus is spreading all over the world right now. In Japan, people are spending more time at home as the government has been urging them to refrain from going outside. As a result, sales have skyrocketed for pre-mixed ingredients and essences that are needed when making sweets and snacks, as well as for mouthwashes and disinfectants owing to increased awareness toward infection prevention measures. This article will feature activities that have trended and items that have become bestsellers in Japan due to the coronavirus.

Doing Things Remotely

Companies have been promoting remote work in response to the government’s call for everyone to avoid going outside (currently lifted) in order to stem the spread of the coronavirus. This has led to a growing number of people embracing the idea of spending their time outside of work and their holidays online.

Drinking Parties on Zoom

People in Japan are practicing self-restraint when it comes to the drinking parties that they used to enjoy with work colleagues and friends after work. These parties have now shifted online via Zoom. With this kind of drinking party, friends and colleagues prepare their own alcoholic beverages and snacks at home and drink with each other while video chatting.

I also tried holding a drinking party via Zoom and I have to say, despite the distance, I still enjoyed the party as I knew that we were helping to stop the spread of infection. I am keenly aware that the concept of “remote” has become very important these days in protecting the lives of our loved ones without severing our ties with other people.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Produced by Nintendo, Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a popular game wherein players live on an uninhabited island and interact with the animals that live there. The Animal Crossing series has been popular since it was launched, but with people spending more time at home, its latest installment for the Nintendo Switch has become an explosive hit. This game also has an online game option that will let you talk with friends within the game, drawing massive support for it as a game that players can enjoy even during the pandemic.

Creating a Cafe at Home

With more time spent indoors, the way people spend time at home has also changed. In particular, they now spend less time in cafes and more time with their family, so the number of households that have been making and enjoying coffee and sweets with their families has risen.

Dalgona Coffee

This is a coffee drink that has become a massive hit in South Korea. It is made by mixing instant coffee, sugar, and water together, and then whisking them until you get a creamy consistency before pouring the coffee mix into a cup filled with milk. It is easy to make, delicious, and looks good on Instagram, so a lot of people got hooked on it!

I tried making this coffee drink, too. It was really quite simple to make and for me, its moderate sweetness was very delicious and perfect for my body that had become so stressed from staying at home for a prolonged period of time. Being able to savor the vibe of a cafe in your own home will definitely change your mood!

Fruit Candy

Fruit candy is made by wrapping a piece of juicy fruit in sweet syrup. Especially popular among young people, its cute appearance definitely looks great on Instagram! There are already a lot of people who have gotten addicted to the crisp, crackly sound it makes when you chew it! If you go on social media platforms like YouTube, you will find plenty of videos of people making their own original fruit candies.

Disney Churros

Disneyland was forced to close all its theme parks around the world in an effort to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Many of its fans were saddened by the closure, but Disneyland Resort came up with a smart idea that has blown up online: releasing the recipe for its famous churros! As soon as the recipe was made available online, people started to make these churros. Even in Japan, many people staying at home have been using up their time making these delights.

I tried making these churros and not only did I get to savor the atmosphere of Disneyland in my own home, but I also enjoyed the delicious taste of the churros themselves!

Pancake Mix, Butter, and Eggs

Against the backdrop of an increasing number of people trying to make sweets at home due to the pandemic, sales have also climbed for ingredients like pancake mixes, butter, and eggs. Pancake mixes in particular have been extremely popular, to the point where supermarkets throughout Japan are finding their racks empty of them. This unexpected phenomenon has been happening with other surprising products throughout the city.

Home Goods and Activities

As people spend more time at home, they are finding ways to make their time indoors more productive and fun. This desire has given birth to a phenomenon wherein people are actively immersing themselves in their hobbies, taking on new hobbies, and reexamining their surroundings.

Mask Making

Demand for masks to prevent the spread of the coronavirus has risen, leading to a shortage of masks in shops. As a result, more and more people are now making effective use of their time at home to create their own original masks. I guess many people who are not really into sewing are now drawn to it after trying it, or are finding fun in something they used to be indifferent about.

When you stay at home continuously for a long time, you suddenly get bothered by things you normally didn’t care about, right? The concept of throwing away unnecessary stuff and not getting too attached to things to achieve a minimalist lifestyle is called “decluttering,” and many people are doing it now. Looking at the things around you and organizing them will definitely refresh your mind and break the boredom you feel when stuck at home.

I also decluttered my home by sorting the things I needed and didn’t need, and either throwing away or selling unnecessary stuff on flea market sites. You can say that the coronavirus also gave me time to rethink myself and my life.

This article introduced the things people in Japan have been doing and buying as a result of the coronavirus. Each country’s coronavirus situation may be different, but if there is something you are even mildly interested in, now just might be the best time to engage in it or take it up as a hobby in the comfort of your own home!
