Enjoy a romantic world! 5 Recommended Christmas Events in Japan

Japan has plenty of Christmas events around the country that fill the streets with people. Here are some Christmas events that you'll want to check out while you're here!

1. Hakata Ekimae Plaza (Fukuoka)

Fukuoka has begun a new winter tradition with the Fukuoka Christmas Market. As part of it, they open the Christmas Market in Hikari no Machi Hakata in front of Hakata Station. Hutte (German booths) are lined up in the plaza sparkling with illuminations, and they sell Christmas goods and traditional sweets imported from Europe, as well as mulled wine to warm your chilled body. On the stage, they have various programs throughout the period including live music and shows.

Event will be held between November 15th (Tuesday) and December 25th (Sunday), 2016

1. Hakata Ekimae Plaza (Fukuoka)

2. Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan (Osaka)

One of the world's leading aquariums, the Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan, becomes surrounded with a huge light event every year. The 2016-2017 theme is "To the Underwater World of Glittering Creatures!" The marine animals living in the ocean are depicted with beautiful lighting. The entire aquarium becomes full of the ocean of light. On the holidays and weekends between Tuesday, November 22nd and Sunday, December 25th, the aquarium staff have a lighting ceremony with participation from some of the animals. It's free to see the illumination. Entrance fee is 2,300 JPY (incl. tax) for adults.

Event will be held between November 22nd (Tuesday), 2016 and March 5th (Sunday), 2017

2. Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan (Osaka)

1-1-10 Kaigandori, Minato-ku, Osaka-shi, Osaka

3. Tokyo Midtown (Tokyo)

Tokyo Midtown is a facility in Roppongi where you can enjoy various illuminations. A must-see is the Starlight Garden 2016, a sight overflowing with blue and white light in the image of space. The plaza is covered in 180,000 LED lights for a magical show made of beautiful lights and music. Every 12 minutes, a large shooting star flies above your head for a romantic sight! There's a special tour held between Thursday, December 1st and Friday, December 16th that will show guests the best parts of the illumination (1,500 JPY (incl. tax)). Part of the tour is available in English or Chinese.

3. Tokyo Midtown (Tokyo)

4. Hisaya Odori Park (Aichi)

Hisaya Odori Park is in Sakae, the heart of Nagoya, and there they hold the NAGOYA Akari Night. It's held in the park from the symbol of the city, the Nagoya TV Tower, to the Mochinoki Plaza. The areas inside the park and around the Sakae River are decorated with beautiful lights. There is also a collaboration of the night view and projection mapping called STAR LIGHT FANTASIA by NAKED on the observation deck of the TV Tower (1,000 JPY). On the windows and the ceiling, many glittering stars are projected so you can gaze at the city enveloped by a magical starry sky.

NAGOYA Akari Night is scheduled to be held between December 16th (Friday), 2016 and January 15th (Sunday), 2017
STAR LIGHT FANTASIA by NAKED will be held between November 26th (Saturday), 2016 and February 26th (Sunday), 2017

4. Hisaya Odori Park (Aichi)

5. Sendai Trust City (Miyagi)

Sendai Trust City is the landmark of Sendai, and every year it becomes enveloped in an illumination event that lights up the whole city. The 2016 event is an upgrade from 2015, and uses 55,000 LED lights. There's a light tunnel and a circle illumination, as well as other must-sees like a road lit up in champagne gold. An illuminated tree will also make an appearance to create a gorgeous mood.

Event will be held between November 18th (Friday), 2016 and February 28th (Tuesday), 2017

5. Sendai Trust City (Miyagi)

1-9 Ichiban-cho, Aoba-ku, Sendai-shi, Miyagi

All of these events are filled with a romantic mood! Seeing them is free, so please enjoy them at your leisure.
