You’ll Want to Climb Them! 7 Towers Around Japan

Of course, you want to see the view from atop them, but in all of these towers you can also enjoy the facilities and illuminations and even buy souvenirs! Here are 7 towers popular with tourists.

1. Tokyo Skytree (Tokyo)

Skytree is the tallest standing radio tower in the world, standing at 634m. The elevator takes only 50 seconds to the Tembo Deck at 350m! The Tembo Galleria, at 450m, feels like a walk through the sky, and it's a must-see. There's also an aquarium and a planetarium, and you can also shop! The best place to take a full shot of the tower is the little-known dome garden. Don't forget to see it lit up at night!

2. Tokyo Tower (Tokyo)

Tokyo Tower is beautiful with its red iron structure. You can get to the main observation deck at 150m by a set of outside stairs (can close due to weather). It's lit-up from sunset to midnight, so it's a different view of the tower during the day. Observation deck hours: 9:00 am - 11:00 pm (last entry 10:30 pm)
Fees: Main observation deck for adults over 16 - 900 JPY; special observation deck for adults over 16 - 700 JPY (ticket to the main observation deck required)

3. Tsutenkaku (Osaka)

Tsutenkaku is the symbol of Shinsekai, a very Osaka-like area with really gaudy signboards. Tsutenkaku was built in the image of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. When you go to the observation deck, don't forget to pray at the god of happiness, Billiken. Business hours: 9:00 am - 9:00 pm (last entry at 8:30 pm)

4. Kyoto Tower (Kyoto)

Kyoto Tower is the world's tallest non-steel construction tower. It has the tallest observation deck in the city at 100m with a 360 degree view. It's a popular spot to see the night view. It has a restaurant, famous shops where you can buy souvenirs, a large public bath, and even a lodging area where you can stay as a convenient base for your sightseeing in Kyoto.

5. Fukuoka Tower (Fukuoka)

This is a tower covered in 8,000 half-mirrors. It's on the ocean coast, so you can also enjoy the sea view. After sundown, once an hour on the hour it's lit-up. There are special illuminations for seasons and events, too!

6. Goryokaku Tower (Hokkaido)

You can see Japan's first Western-style fortress built in 1864, the star-shaped remains of Goryokaku, from this tower. If you go to the Goryokaku Tower observation deck, you can get a 30 minute historical guide for an extra 200 JPY (Japanese only). Leaflets are available for foreign tourists.
Business hours: April 20th to October 20th: 8:00 am - 7:00 pm; October 21st to April 19th: 9:00 am - 6:00 pm

6. Goryokaku Tower (Hokkaido)

7. Higashiyama Sky Tower (Aichi)

This tower is on the grounds of Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens. It's known as a lovers' spot, so it's popular not just with families but with couples. When the weather is good, you can even see the faraway Mt. Ontake and the Suzuka Mountain range from the observation deck. It's recommended that you visit the zoo in the morning and then stop by the tower.
Business hours: 9:00 am - 9:30 pm (closes at 9:30 pm)
Fees: 300 JPY for adults, free for those under 15
Closed on Mondays
