Newly Released An-Butter Flavor Potato Chips Inspired by the Flavors of Iwate Prefecture
Calbee Inc. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Shuji Ito) will release An-Butter Flavor Potato Chips, which recreate the taste of Fukuda Pan's An-Butter Sandwich, beloved as a soul food among residents of Morioka City in Iwate Prefecture. It will hit the shelves on Monday, November 18, 2019, in eight prefectures (Iwate, Aomori, Miyagi, Akita, Yamagata, Fukushima, Niigata, and Nagano) as a limited time product in limited quantities. This article introduces this new and noteworthy product.
How did this flavor come about?
The Japanese snack food maker, Calbee Inc., initiated the Love Japan project to develop regional flavors from Japan's 47 prefectures, and released limited quantities of potato chips recreating local prefectural flavors for a limited time in both the 2017 and 2018 fiscal years. In the 2019 fiscal year, the third year of the project, they are introducing potato chips with prefectural flavors in three phases. The new An-Butter Flavored Potato Chips this year will be released during the second phase.
The illustration on the front of the bag features anko (sweet bean paste) on one half and butter on the other half to represent the An-Butter Sandwich by Fukuda Pan bakery. Sobacchi, one of Iwate's adorable mascot characters, also makes an appearance on the package to add familiarity. The back of the bag has a beautiful photograph of the Sanriku Coast in Iwate Prefecture at night to help promote the appeals of Iwate Prefecture.
The flavors and packaging of this product were decided through an online call for ideas, in addition to workshops and tastings with locals, ensuring that the flavor was born from the locals' love for Iwate.
There were many other potential flavors, but the An-Butter Sandwich by Fukuda Pan had the greatest support. So how exactly does this flavor taste?
What are the characteristics?
The An-Butter Flavored Potato Chips are based on the An-Butter Sandwich sold by Fukuda Pan, an established bakery with its main store in the Nagatacho area of Morioka, Iwate. This year, it is celebrating its 71st anniversary. The An-butter Sandwich is by far its most popular product, and it consists of a very filling bread roll that is about 20cm long.
So how do the potato chips taste? When you take a bite, the flavors of anko and butter will instantly fill your mouth, and when you are finished, you are left with the gentle aroma of the roll.
