1. KAWAII MONSTER CAFE HARAJUKU (Tokyo)
Harajuku’s kawaii, or “cute,” culture is all about being colorful and pop with a twist of grotesque elements. KAWAII MONSTER CAFE HARAJUKU was created by art director Sebastian Masuda, a big promoter of Harajuku’s creative and eccentric world view. A vibrant merry-go-round shaped like a huge cake is the first thing you’ll encounter inside this cafe. Next, you’ll be taken to your table by one of the house’s iconic MONSTER GIRLS dressed in their highly original attires. The tables are divided into four different zones, each with their own unique theme. With a variety of original dishes, such as the richly colored chocolate cream cake called “Colorful Poison CAKE (Chemical)” (850 JPY and up (excl. tax)), you’ll be taking pictures before you even notice it!
2. Cafe Hassui (Kyoto)
Situated in the popular area of Arashiyama, Cafe Hassui is located inside a tea ceremony cottage annxed to Suiran Hotel, a Luxury Collection Hotel, in Kyoto. The cafe’s location right in front of a beautiful aquamarine river offers you a breathtaking view of the surroundings. Choose a table inside the cottage or on the terrace and appreciate the different landscapes the passage of the seasons brings. The architecture of this renovated building with more than 100 years of history is also worth noticing. The gorgeous Japanese Afternoon Tea (4,200 JPY (excl. tax)) is one of their most popular dishes and allows you to, literally, feel Kyoto with your five senses. This afternoon tea set presents a colorful assortment of Japanese and Western delicacies, including Japanese sweets from long-established Japanese confectioneries.
3. Moomin House Café TOKYO SKYTREE TOWN Solamachi Branch (Tokyo)
Moomin House Café is a themed cafe based on the house portrayed in the Finnish fairy tale Moomin. As you would expect, the cafe’s interior design is a reproduction of the images seen in the stories. If you’re a fan of the series, you’ll love it here: the walls are covered with drawings of all your favorite characters! The menu offers a lineup of Finnish dishes, including pancakes inspired by the Moomin House (1,800 JPY (excl. tax)) and the Veggie Bowl Meatballs Plate (1,300 JPY (excl. tax)), where the rice is shaped like Moomin. Be sure not to miss the selection of original goods the cafe has on offer!
4. gram SUNSHINE SAKAE Branch (Aichi)
