Perfect for Professionals! How to Enjoy Osaka’s Sennichimae Doguyasuji Shotengai
Sennichimae Doguyasuji Shotengai is a shopping arcade in Osaka that specializes in tools related to cooking and dining. It is already a whole lot of fun just looking at all the items that line up this street, including kitchen utensils for professionals, signboards of shops and plastic food models. So, here are ways to enjoy this commercial complex.
What is Sennichimae Doguyasuji Shotengai?
Located in Osaka’s Namba district, Sennichimae Doguyasuji Shotengai is a commercial district that is dedicated to kitchen tools. This arcade is 150m long and houses more than 50 shops that are filled with nearly every imaginable article related to food, from tools used by professional chefs, up to cookware and tableware that are perfect for the regular household. There are also shops that sell signboards, noren (store curtains) and uniforms for the service crews of restaurants, so you won’t get tired of going around this arcade.
Look at the tools of craftsmen
This commercial arcade also has shops that sell tools that are associated with just one thing! The extensive lineup of tools that are exclusively used for cooking specialty dishes of Osaka such as okonomiyaki (savory pancakes) and takoyaki (octopus dumplings) will surely catch your eye. There are tables with iron plates for cooking okonomiyaki, as well as takoyaki pans with perfectly round holes or pockets to make the takoyaki dumplings even in size and shape.
Aside from those, you will also see the buckets and wooden boards used by sushi chefs, and knives for cutting noodles that are essential for soba (buckwheat noodles) makers, as well as cotton candy and popcorn machines that are commonly found in stalls when there are events. It’s so much fun!
Check out and don’t miss the events, too
This commercial district also holds the Doguyasuji Festival every autumn. On this day, an event space is allocated and in this space, various shows and events take place.
In 2016, guests were treated to different programs during the festival, including the demonstration and tasting of the world’s biggest taiyaki (fish-shaped pancake with bean paste inside), candy grabbing event, and tuna dissection show. This festival is always packed with a lot of people as even the individual shops prepare their own events, such as offering free taste or sampling, hands-on activities, and demonstrations! You might even be able to buy products at just 10 JPY at the “Horidashimono-ichi” (bargain market), the great bargain event that only happens once a year!
Grab some souvenirs!
If you are already at the shopping arcade, then why not look for and buy souvenirs that are only available there? You might want to check out items that Japan is famous for, like “sushiya no yunomi” (sushi joint teacups) and “shokuhin sample” (plastic food models) that look like the real thing.
At Design Pocket, the shop that specializes in plastic food samples, you can even try making your own food samples. If you take part in the “Sweet Tart Seisaku Taiken” (hands-on sweet tart making course) (2,160 JPY (incl. tax)), you can actually turn your food sample into a strap (100 JPY each) when you’re done. It will be perfect as a handmade souvenir or a memento of your trip.

There are many shops serving Osaka dishes around the arcade
After walking around this shopping arcade, head to any of the shops around the area that serve delicious Osaka specialty dishes at affordable prices!
Here, Takoyaki Doraku Wanaka Sennichimae Main Branch, a famous takoyaki shop that always has a queue of customers outside its doors, is highly recommended. Its most popular dish is the Takoyaki (450 JPY for eight pieces) that is topped with the shop’s original sauce. You will love the fruity taste of the takoyaki that perfectly balances sweetness and acidity.
The main branch of Chibo Sennichimae Main Branch, a national okonomiyaki franchise, is also recommended. This restaurant takes pride in its aromatic special sauce. The secret to the delicious taste of its okonomiyaki is the mild aftertaste despite being a little sweet! You’ll be glad to know that they have staff who can speak in English, Chinese and Korean.
Sennichimae Doguyasuji Shotengai is a commercial district that supports the food culture of Osaka, which is said to be the Japan's kitchen. So, engage in your interest in food and check out this place.
