The area around Osaka Station and Umeda Station is one of the leading shopping areas in the Kansai region. It covers a wide range of shopping needs, from fashion, up to souvenirs and food items. Here are five of the most recommended shopping facilities in the area that offer easy access thanks to their proximity to the train station.
1. Osaka Station City
The first shopping facility on this list is Osaka Station City, which surrounds JR Osaka Station. Designed with the concept of “new discoveries and feelings every time,” this is a spot that links the train station to the town of Umeda. It is comprised of the North Gate Building and South Gate Building, and is home to a wide range of shops and establishments that include shopping and food spots and cinemas. Aside from the fashion building Lucua Osaka and the department store Daimaru Umeda, there are also many shopping malls inside this facility. You will also find an Eki Don Qui shop where you can buy sweets, electronics and affordable cosmetics, along with drugstores that carry a wide range of drugs and medicines, among other shops.
2. Lucua Osaka
Lucua Osaka at the North Gate Building is a commercial mall that is made up of Lucua in the East Building and Lucua 1100 in the West Building. Lucua’s main targets are fashion-conscious women, as it is filled with about 200 stores selling fashion goods, cosmetics and sweets. It has the biggest collection of popular brands and the flagship stores of select shops. Meanwhile, Lucua 1100 is a spot that evokes a new lifestyle, having been designed under the concept, “gap, contrast, marriage.” This shopping arcade combines items from different genres, such as fashion, miscellaneous goods and cosmetics, to create new value.
3. Daimaru Umeda
Located at the South Gate Building, Daimaru Umeda is the birthplace of department stores in the Osaka region. Its 1st to 12th floors house a long list of famous fashion brands, cosmetics shops, shoe stores and miscellaneous daily articles. While Daimaru Umeda has an image of being a high-class department store, it actually carries products and goods that are relatively affordable. The 13th floor is a place where you can enjoy shopping at Uniqlo, the representative shop of fast fashion in Japan, and at Pokemon Center Osaka that has a collection of Pokemon goods. There’s also a Tokyu Hands, which sells a wide range of goods from electronics to everyday miscellaneous goods and stationery, on the 10th-12th floors.
4. Hankyu Umeda Main Store
Located on the east side right next to JR Osaka Station and directly linked to Hankyu Railway’s Umeda Station of Hankyu Railway, Hankyu Umeda is considered to be the most high-class out of all the department stores in Umeda. It carries high-quality items in all segments, from accessories up to daily necessities. This place aims to become a “theatrical department store” that offers surprises, emotions and admiration. It houses a cosmetics floor that is the largest in all of western Japan, selling limited items that can only be bought there. Go to the Nihon no Teshigoto Salon (Japanese Handicrafts Salon) on the 7th floor and you will find handicrafts showcasing the skills of craftsmen that are perfect for souvenirs, too.
5. Hanshin Umeda Main Building
Hanshin Umeda, which is directly connected to the Umeda Station of Hanshin Electric Railway, is situated on the south side of Umeda. Major renovations are underway at this store right now, so as of December 2016, it was operating in a reduced scale and space. This department store is scheduled to partly reopen in 2018 and then shift to full-fledged operation in 2022. Its food court houses all sorts of shops, gathering a lot of delicious and tasty treats such as desserts and side dishes. You should not miss the ikayaki (grilled squid), a specialty of the Hanshin (Osaka and Kobe) region. Made by frying bite-sized squid rings dipped in batter from a combination of flour and dashi soup stock, the ikayaki is an exquisite cheap but delicious dish in the region. It is a taste that is well loved by locals, with as many as 10,000 pieces apparently sold on a busy day.
