Ura-Namba is the area to the south and east of Namba Grand Kagetsu. It was once an area full of shops selling kitchen tools and furniture. Those shops have closed and now, cool eateries by young owners who want to avoid the high rents in the Shinsaibashi and Namba areas are opening one after another.
Ura-Namba is full of unique shops including those in Misono Building, which combines elements of underground culture and sub-culture with a hint of the Showa period. There are many popular eateries including the Ajito cafe and bar and Japanese sake bars run by breweries. A Wide Selection of Sake from Famous Breweries Served with Food from Tamba
NIPPON no SAKE Kotsuzumi Onri offers mainly Kotsuzumi, a sake popular around the world for its fresh taste that is produced by Nishiyama Shuzojo, which was established in 1849. There is a shop on the first floor and in the standing bar on the second floor, you can enjoy pure sake available only here with snacks made with ingredients from Tamba (historic name for parts of the Kansai region).
Beef Tendon and Sake with Plums (photo right front・324 JPY), Jyunmai Sake Tasting Set (1,080 JPY), etc. The tasting set through which you can enjoy three types of Kotsuzumi with different aromas and flavors go well with the beef seasoned with the slight aroma of plum and egg (back right・324 JPY) marinated in homemade shio koji made with sweet sake.
The interior is designed by the artist, Hirosuke Watanuki, who designed the labels. It is close to Kuromon Market, which is popular among foreign visitors.
Yumi Yamatani, a staff member, comments "We have all the Kotsuzumi products, from jyunmai to daiginjo. Many of our fans are restaurant owners."
A Cafe for Bread × Osaka Wines × Creative Cuisine
TABLE Ajito is a new restaurant by Ura-Namba trailblazer, Ajito. It is a "base from which to spread new things" that combines a bakery & cafe and bar and is run as a new type of popular restaurant that can be patronized both during the day and in the evening. Here, you get the triple benefit of bread that is baked fresh every day, Osaka wines, and creative cuisine.
The Ajito-style Butatama (pictured in front・680 JPY) is a fluffy okonomiyaki made with egg whites and tofu that goes perfectly with wine! The cheese fondue, which is an arrangement of the gorgonzola toast served in the main store, is also outstanding.
Opened as Ajito's fourth store. The American vintage style space is very comfortable.
"A lot of the breads baked on site are hard, savory breads. The baguette, which is 250 JPY each, is recommended," says Kensaku Kubota, the baker.
Kushiage of Approximately 40 different Ingredients Made with Specially-ordered Fresh Bread Crumbs
Baranzzaku is famous for its approximately forty different types of kushiage deep-fried skewers that are lightly fried in a home blend of oils. The ingredients range from fresh seafood, such as abalone and shrimp, to mapo tofu that is prepared over a period of two days and gratin of seafood. It is a well kept secret where you can enjoy the superior flavors of meticulously prepared food at reasonable prices.
The Six Kushiage Course (2,052 JPY). Includes six kushiage deep-fried skewers, including squid & sea urchin (front) and beef tenderloin (middle left) that is eaten with a demi glace sauce. *Contents change depending on the day's procurement. Lunch is teishoku sets only starting at 900 JPY.
One of its appeals is its location in a back alley. There is a counter and one table. The owner, Mitsuru Yamaguchi, comments, "we use specially ordered finely ground fresh bread crumbs and home-blended vegetable oils so that the natural flavors of the ingredients are enhanced."
Enjoy Ten Types of Offal with Special Black and White Sauces!
Sakagami Ura-Namba Branch is the Namba outlet of a horumon sakaba (bar serving offals) that became a hit when it opened in Umeda in January 2016. It is about to ignite a horumon (offals) revolution in Minami as well. The owner, who loves horumon, created his unique menu based on his experiences eating horumon in a variety of different places. One of its distinguishing features is the slanted iron grill that enables the meat juices to mix into bean sprouts and noodles on the grill. The staff grill the food for you so you need not worry about overcooking.
Yakiniku Horumon Sakagami Course (2,916 JPY/person). Choose five types of horumon from a selection of 10, including tongue, small intestine and heart and eat them dipped in white or black sauce. The combination of the sauce and the umami extract from the juices of the grilled horumon is outstanding. It also includes bottomless servings of bean sprouts (the photo is of two servings).
The restaurant is in a corner property and can be identified by the 150 lanterns that adorn the exterior. You can see the lively atmosphere from outside through the wide glass front windows on the first floor. The owner, Sho Sakagami, comments, "We want you to enjoy everything to the end! You can choose either soba noodles or udon noodles to close off the meal. The fresh soba noodles is mixed with plenty of horumon extract and is fabulous so give it a try!"
Enjoy High-Grade Ingredients at Reasonable Prices! A New Development from a Famous Ura-Namba Restaurant
Sushi Hidezo is the sushi outlet of the popular Ura-Namba restaurant, Hidezo. Since the owner entity is a fish wholesaler, it is known for quality, fresh fish available at reasonable prices. The luxury ingredient, hon-maguro (bluefin tuna), which is served in ryotei restaurants in Shinchi, is available for just 200 JPY per sushi. All the ingredients, of which there are approximately 30 types at any given time, are all available to order as single sushi (100 JPY and up).
Nigiri Sushi (starting at 100 JPY/piece). Try the Akami of Hon-Maguro, which has superbly balanced umami flavors (front・200 JPY). The Swordtip Squid with deep, sweet flavors (third from front・200 JPY) is also recommended.
Fifteen of the total of 30 seats are at the counter, so it is convenient to drop in on your own. The array of ingredients in the case right in front of you is impressive. The wood-based interior, which was designed in the image of an old-school sushi bar, has an atmosphere you can relax in. The restaurant's director, Yuzo Nakamoto, explains, "I had sushi in a variety of places when I was selling fish to Tokyo sushi restaurants as a wholesaler. This is a restaurant based on the knowledge I acquired then, so I think our customers will be satisfied."
Revolutionizing Sushi with a Varied Menu!
su-shi Uoharu's owner, Mr. Chinzei, comments, "I want our customers to enjoy sushi as if they are in a cafe." There is casual sofa seating in the large restaurant. The sushi is authentic sushi with a full range of ingredients, including maguro noten (head) and cheeks.

The interior is large with many different types of seating, so it is perfect for a girls' night out or for end-of-the-year get togethers.
An Outstanding Menu Beyond the Level of Standing Bars with Great Bang for the Buck!
Monzo has the same casual atmosphere as its sister bar on the first floor but serves food made with high grade ingredients and sophisticated cooking methods. There is a wide selection of luxury menu items you would not expect in a standing bar. It is a great place to go either on your own or with a large group. Smoking is not allowed, so you can savor the rich seafood served here.
There are unique oden pot dish menus, such as Maru-tomato (Western-style cream) (378 JPY).
The restaurant, which can accommodate more than 40 guests, has a long counter as well as tables large and small. A view of Minami is visible through the large window. Yuto Nishikawa, a staff member, comments, "We'll be introducing more and more Western-style French dishes to supplement the Japanese menu items such as sashimi, simmered dishes, and deep-fried dishes that go well with sake."
A New Type of Steak by a Hamburger Master!
THE BUTCHER was opened by BURGERLION, a burger shop in Awaza extremely popular for its fancy burgers. The specialty menu here is a steak of shoulder meat or rib roast from Australian beef descended from Tajima cattle.
The Brooklyn Mashed Beef (photo front・750 JPY) of grilled beef patties and the Shoulder Steak (back・3,000 JPY/approx. 300g), with outstanding flavors from the fat, are both good to share.
Located near the Namba Grand Kagetsu theater. The interior is designed to evoke a Brooklyn warehouse.
The Horse Meat from Aomori with Rich Umami Flavors is Popular Among Women
At Nikuzushi in Ura-Namba Sennichimae, you can enjoy ingredients such as wagyu beef, horse meat, chicken, and duck raw, flame grilled, or cooked at low temperatures in meat sushi. The horse meat, which is healthy and popular among women, is procured from the standard producers in Kumamoto, and also from Aomori, where the horse meat is rich with no odor.
Irodori Moriawase (1,600 JPY). A luxurious combination plate including high-grade red horse meat (photo front right) from Aomori Prefecture, otoro (front left), duck toro, foie gras inari sushi and wagyu beef/sea urchin/toro battleship roll.
The main color on the second floor is red. The modern and calm atmosphere is popular among female patrons.
The manager, Sho Takemura, comments, "We have about 80 different types of drinks, including sake that go well with horse meat and wines."
The Homemade Smoked Food and Creative Vegetable Dishes are Popular!
The Ura-Namba branch of Jammy is a restaurant that is like a hideaway on a narrow back street in Sennichimae that is popular, particularly among women, for its approximately 20 types of smoked food and the creative vegetable dishes. Its signature Smoked Bacon (648 JPY) is an outstanding item made with homemade bacon that has been aged for more than 20 days.
The Smoke Workshop's Assorted Smoked Food Set (1,814 JPY/for two). Includes a variety of ten of its most popular smoked foods, such as bacon, cheese, and quail's eggs.
The reggae mural features prominently in the restaurant. It is a free-standing bar in an alley between NGK and Wanaka.
