It is a must to try out the food at Dotonbori, which is known as Osaka's top sightseeing spot. There are a ridiculous number of restaurants available here. This article introduces restaurants that offer delicious lunches for under 1,000 JPY at Dotonbori, Osaka.
1. Dotonbori Imai Main Branch
Dotonbori Imai is an udon restaurant that’s only a few seconds away by foot from the famous Glico sign. This may seem like a top-notch restaurant, but you’ll find many affordable dishes for sale at this peaceful shop. It is recommended to try the Kitsune Udon (756 JPY (incl. tax)). The robust and refined broth is made with natural kelp, dried mackerel, and shredded round herring. The dishes are created fresh to produce a wonderful aroma. Please try out the fluffy and chewy noodles that go with the delicious broth.
2. Bonkuraya Dotonbori Branch
Bonkuraya offers okonomiyaki (Japanese savory pancake), which is a staple dish in Osaka’s cuisine. The most popular one among locals would be the okonomiyaki with a rich yam filling. They sell other types of okonomiyaki that use a variety of ingredients, such as the orthodox Butatama (830 JPY (excl. tax)) and the Ebitama (930 JPY (excl. tax)), which are both sold for under 1,000 JPY. If you want to try out different flavors, it is a good idea to try the Puchiyaki 6-shu, which costs 1,080 JPY (excl. tax). This may be a bit over 1,000 JPY, but it is especially popular among females and those with children due to its different flavors, which you can try out bit by bit with each bite.
3. Showa Taishu Horumon Namba Dotonbori Branch
This restaurant offers an extravagant yakiniku (grilled meat) lunch at a reasonable price, which is comprised of specially selected Japanese Kuroge beef and local innards. The Showa Nikumori Lunch, which is made of local roast with little fat, costs only 880 JPY (excl. tax). The restaurant also offers a Local Rib Roast Steak Lunch (200g), which you may eat with wasabi and rock salt. However, they make only 5 dishes a day, with each one costing 980 JPY (excl. tax). Their close proximity to a butcher’s shop is the reason for their high quality meat and affordability. Bask in the brilliant retro atmosphere as you grill your food on top of coal. You may also ask for extra rice for free. Please enjoy your yakiniku lunch with a huge serving of rice!

4. King-emon Dotonbori
King-emon is a restaurant popular for its soy sauce ramen. Order your food by purchasing a food ticket from the automated vending machine, and then decide on the thickness of the noodles when handing over the ticket to the restaurant staff. It is recommended to try the simple Kin-Shoyu Ramen (with Boiled Egg) (800 JPY) for those who like thin noodles. If you like your noodles thick, it is recommended to try their Osaka Black (with Boiled Egg) (850 JPY) instead. If you pay a bit more, you can get a lunch set which includes rice (150 JPY for regular size), a pork bowl (250 JPY for small size), dumplings (250 JPY), and fried chicken (250 JPY for 3 pieces). Please try it out!
5. Iccyou Dotonbori Branch
This restaurant offers sushi with toppings so big, you cannot even see the rice beneath it! Each piece is a ridiculously cheap 50 JPY. The best part is that the chef hand makes them one by one! This restaurant is especially cheap during lunch time, thanks to its Sushi Meal Set (850 JPY (incl. tax)) that is comprised of warm udon noodles and 10 pieces of sushi. These warm udon noodles are also part of a set with either the Salmon Roe Bowl (950 JPY (incl. tax)) or the Raw Tuna Rice Bowl (850 JPY (incl. tax)).
