5 Places in Osaka Where You Can Taste Great Blowfish Cuisine

Osaka is well-known as the food capital of Japan, and there are many fugu (blowfish) restaurants in the city. There are many different ways of handling fugu, including as a hotpot side dish, sashimi, deep fried, and even the fins of the fugu can be mixed with Japanese sake to make fugu sake! Here 5 restaurants in Osaka where you can taste this wonderful delicacy.

1. Takoyasu

If you are looking to taste fugu of the finest grade, Takoyasu is the place for you. Recent advancements in fugu research and farming have allowed this delicacy to be available throughout the year. However, at Takoyasu, a store established well over 80 years ago, only wild fugu is used in their cuisine, which is why it is only available during the fall (October - April).
The reservations-only Tecchiri Course (20,000 JPY excl. tax) allows diners to taste fugu in the form of sashimi and hotpot. The fugu used in the Tecchiri (the Osakan name for fugu hotpot) is brought in directly from the place of origin, guaranteeing its freshness. The fugu is grilled in order to bring out its savoriness, and combined with the vegetable soup stock this dish is a masterpiece. Finishing up with the zousui (rice boiled in hotpot soup) makes for a full and unforgettable dining experience. Try it if you have a chance!

Every morning, the proprietor of Sushidokoro Nishiki examines the fish that is brought in from the market. For 8,300 JPY (excl. tax), you can enjoy the well-received Tecchiri Course, which includes parboiled Torafugu, Fugu Sashimi, Tecchiri, and Zousui (2 persons and above, by reservation only). If that's not enough, you could also try the soft and creamy Yaki Shirako (grilled fugu soft roe) (2,000 JPY), or the crispy Fugu Karaage (fried fugu) (2,000 JPY)! The policy here is that only 3-year old fugu is used. The lean meat keeps the juices in, so you can taste the fugu in all of its savory goodness. As Fuguyoshi also operates during lunch time, you can easily slot in a visit to this place into your sightseeing schedule to try the Lunch Tecchiri Course (3,740 JPY (incl. tax)). Their dinner menu has a larger variety of choices, such as the Fugu Mini Kaiseki (3,740 JPY (incl. tax)), Fugu Hotpot Course (5,690 JPY (incl. tax)) and the Fugu Karaage Course (6,860 JPY (incl. tax)). You should choose which course you want depending on the cooking method that you want to try.

Junpei is located in the busiest and most famous district of Osaka, Kitashinchi. Besides providing seasonal cuisine, the high class ingredients fugu and soft shell turtle are available throughout the year. Torafugu, a breed of fugu, is prepared in order to bring out the full savoriness before being used in Junpei's cooking. From 6,000 JPY (excl. tax), you can have a course meal, which includes sashimi, hotpot, and karaage. If you make an advance reservation, you can get the course at a discounted 5,000 JPY (incl. tax). The selling point of this restaurant is that it provides soft shell turtle cuisine, said to be highly nutritious and good for the skin, as well as a good assortment of Japanese sake.

5. Fukunoya

The sukiya-style architecture and the counter made of a single plank of Japanese cypress make for a calm and relaxing atmosphere in Fukunoya. The a la carte menu has a really good selection, but the regular line-up for lunch is unagi (eel), and the dinner line-up changes according to season, such as hamo (pike eel) in summer and fugu in winter. Fugu is available from early September to mid-April, and there are 2 courses to choose from, the Fugu Cuisine (Farm-Raised) Karaage Tsuki (14,000 JPY, excl. tax), and the Fugu Cuisine (Wild) at 22,000 JPY (excl. tax). Besides fugu, you can try some authentic Japanese cuisine from the a la carte menu, or the Omakase Course with contents that change according to the season. Don't forget to check with the staff what the contents of the Omakase Course are when you are making your reservation!
