This is the true taste of Okinawa! 5 Local Okinawa Restaurant Chains

Okinawa has a unique food culture. There are various types of restaurants, from those offering original meals based off of Okinawa's natural landscape and restaurants offering regionally limited dishes to restaurants offering Okinawan beer. Here are some regional restaurants in Okinawa to check out.

1. A&W

This American hamburger shop only exists in Okinawa in Japan, and it's referred to as "enda" by locals. The buns are covered in sesame seeds and the patty is deliciously meaty. It comes with curly fries, and the authentic American dishes are why it's so popular. Something you'll want to order along with a hamburger is the root beer, which is all-you-can-drink. It was created during America's Prohibition era, and it's made using the essence from 7 kinds of tree roots mixed with peppermint. It has a unique flavor. It has a beer-like texture. There are 29 branches throughout Okinawa.

2. BLUE SEAL

This ice cream shop started in America but found success in Okinawa. It uses the original American recipe as a base that was modified to match Okinawa's high humidity and temperature, so it's characterized by its smooth texture. There are usually more than 30 colorful flavors at every branch, and they're usually full of locals and tourists alike. The recommended flavors are the 5 flavors that use Okinawan products, like the sweet-and-sour Shikuwasa Sherbet, which uses 100% fruit juice from Okinawan shikuwasa citrus, or the Shio Chinsukou made with Okinawan vanilla and cookies. There are 9 branches within Okinawa, and it's so delicious you'll want to stop by and eat it every day.

3. Orion Beer

Orion Beer holds an overwhelming part of the beer market in Okinawa. The factory is in Nago, so it's sometimes called "the water of Nago," and it's a refreshing beer suitable for the southern islands. You can easily drink it throughout Okinawa, but since you're already there, why not take a trip to the factory (reservations preferred) and stop by the Orion Beer-en Yanbaru no Mori, an area connected to the factory? Since it's inside the factory, you can drink delicious, freshly made beer. You can also enjoy cuisine made with local Okinawa ingredients, and there's also a buffet on the weekends (Fridays - Sundays and holidays, 11:30 am - 2:00 pm) that people of all ages can enjoy.

4. Yoshinoya

This is a reasonably priced gyudon (beef bowl) chain restaurant, but within Okinawa only can you also have the local specialty, taco rice. Taco rice is everything normally used in a Mexican taco, eaten over rice. There are many famous restaurants within Okinawa, but Yoshinoya's is just as delicious. The sour salsa sauce and the spicy meat are addicting. Plus, it's only 350 JPY! It's recommended to order the toppings from the beef bowl only (Gyusara for 330 JPY) and eat that with the taco rice. The mix of the beef and the salsa is something you can only eat in Okinawa, so please try it.
