Nagoya Station’s underground market is a famous commercial facility in Nagoya, but there are many other places where you can enjoy shopping. In this article, we will introduce unique shopping malls and department stores in Nagoya.


1. JR Central Towers

Adjacent to Nagoya Station, JR Central Towers is considered a Nagoya landmark. In this building is the department store JR Nagoya Takashimaya, the variety and home appliance store Tokyu Hands, and Nagoya Marriott Associa Hotel on the upper floors. The age range of the customers is wide, and the stores are varied. Recommended in this building is the Tower Plaza Restaurant Area on the 12th and 13th floors. There are 40 restaurants and cafes with a variety of styles like Japanese, Chinese and Italian. There are also izakaya and many restaurants where the night view of the city can be enjoyed. This is the go-to place if you can't decide where to dine. It is convenient for travelers as the tower is connected to the ticket gate of the station, and has a hotel inside. It might be a good resting location when you get to Nagoya.

Hoshigaoka Terrace is located in Hoshigaoka Station, 20 min from Nagoya Station on the subway Higashiyama Line. This shopping mall is broken into three buildings: EAST, WEST and THE KITCHEN. Around Hoshigaoka S tation is a stylish shopping and leisure area with the department store Mitsukoshi and a fun bowling alley. Hoshigaoka Terrace is very popular for young people as they have a variety of clothing brands like BANANA REPUBLIC, Gap, and UNITED ARROWS Green Label Relaxing. This is a relaxing shopping mall great for shopping and dining with family, friends and significant others. This place is recommended to those who like to avoid tourist spots and to have fun at the local shopping mall.

3. Midland Square

Midland Square is a 5 min walk from Nagoya Station, and can be easily reached by walking through the underground market. This building is the tallest not just in Nagoya but all of Chubu. It is one of many sophisticated facilities around Nagoya Station, which boasts many famous brand stores, popular restaurants, and the movie theatre Cinema Complex. One place you should go when you visit this building is to visit the viewing area Sky Promenade on the 44th to 46th floors. It is amazing to look across the city of Nagoya from 220m above the ground. At night, romantic staging with mist and light makes the night view even dreamier. The entry fee is 750 JPY for adults (over 18), 550 JPY for middle and high school students and seniors (over 65), and 300 JPY for elementary school students. However, it is free to go up to the entrance on the 42nd floor.

4. Nagoya PARCO

Nagoya PARCO is the biggest branch of all the nationwide PARCO department stores. It is right in front of the Meijo Line's Yabacho Station, which is just a 10 min train ride from Nagoya Station. Nagoya PARCO is made up of 4 buildings: east, west, south and PARCO midi. There is a variety of fashion brands and miscellaneous goods stores, as well as facilities like a cinema, live stage, and venue for events. There are other stores like Tower Records, Village Vanguard (a store with many books and goods from Japanese subcultures), and the anime specialty store Animate. Nagoya PARCO is the cross-roads of young Japanese fashion and culture. This is a big shopping mall with many buildings, so it might be great to spend a whole day looking around.

5. Oasis 21

Oasis 21 is a unique looking building with a water-filled glass roof which looks like a ship floating in the sky. It is a composite facility located at Sakae Station, just two stops from Nagoya Station. This place has many stores and restaurants, a lovely green park, an event venue, and a bus terminal. We recommend the Spaceship-Aqua, the roof of Oasis 21. There is a path that goes around the circumference of the roof, and walking through that path feels like strolling around in the sky. It becomes even better at night, as the roof is lit up by LEDs. It is also nice that we can visit this amazing roof for free. On the weekends, playground equipment for children is set up, and there are various shows and events. This is definitely a great place to visit to refresh and have fun.
