Nagoya has its own food culture called "Nagoya meshi" and has made itself known nationwide. Here are some restaurants near Nagoya Station, loved by many, which serve delicious meals!
1. Kitchen Nagoya (Miso Katsu)
Kitchen Nagoya is located at the restaurant area "Nagoya Umaimon Dori" of Nagoya Station. Please try out the Miso Rosu Katsu (miso pork loin cutlets) (1,350 JPY (incl. tax)), if you are interested in trying out the miso cutlets, which is a Nagoya specialty, made of pork cutlets with miso sauce. Please also take the chance to try out the Nagoya Zeitaku Teishoku (1,700 JPY (incl. tax)), which includes 3 of Nagoya's specialties such as Nagoya Cochin tebasaki (fried chicken wings made from Nagoya Cochin brand chicken) and miso doteni, a dish comprised of beef tendon and konjac jelly stewed with hatcho miso, along with the miso katsu.
2. Hitsumabushi Bincho Esca Branch (Hitsumabushi)
Hitsumabushi refers to thinly sliced grilled eel placed on top of rice. The eel is served in a large bowl called "ohitsu," and you serve yourself in a separate bowl from that. Your first bowl is eaten as-is, the second bowl with toppings such as wasabi or green onions, and the third bowl as ochazuke (rice bowl topped with soup or tea), so you can enjoy different flavors. This restaurant uses high quality charcoal to grill the eel with the best possible type of technique. Please visit this restaurant to enjoy superb eel, with a crunchy outside and fluffy inside. It would be recommended to try the Hitsumabushi for 3,100 JPY (excl. tax).
3. Yamamotoya Towers Branch (Miso Nikomi Udon)
Miso Nikomi udon is a popular, traditional dish served in households in Nagoya. This dish is comprised of chewy noodles cooked in thick miso paste broth. Yamamotoya has been in the business since 1925 and serves a well-loved dish called "Futsu Nikomi" (1,037 JPY (incl. tax)), which is made up of red and white miso paste to provide that mild flavor. You would want to try out their Nagoya Cochin Chicken Meatballs Nikomi Udon for 1,590 JPY (incl. tax), which makes use of Nagoya Cochin chicken bred in Aichi.
4. Showashokudo Meieki West Gate Branch (Doteni Beef Tendon, etc.)
Showashokudo is an izakaya next to Nagoya Station West Gate. Showashokudo offers a variety of meals and dessert for their menu as well as a course that comes with an all-you-can-drink. It would be a good idea to try out the Nagoya Meal Course (with 120 min. of all-you-can-drink) for 2,980 JPY (incl. tax) if you are interested in trying out food from the area. This course is compromised of 9 dishes, with 6 of them being Nagoya specialties: miso skewered cutlets, deep fried chicken wings, stewed doteni beef tendon, fried shrimp, tempura shrimp rice balls, and ogura toast (red bean paste on bread).
5. Ekikama Kishimen
This restaurant is located at Chuo-dori inside Nagoya Station and offers an exquisite dish called kishimen, which is also the name of the store. Kishimen refers to udon noodles that are flat in shape and is considered as a staple noodle dish along with udon and soba in Nagoya. You may choose from a salt, soy sauce, or miso-based soup when you order Ekikama Kishimen for 930 JPY (incl. tax)). It would also be recommended to try the Cochin Chicken Nanban Kishimen (1,030 JPY (incl. tax)) which has a superb Nagoya Cochin flavor drawn out by the special broth which is perfectly salty.
