Cheap and Tasty! Five Cafes to Get Outstanding Morning Set Breakfasts in Nagoya

"Morning service," or simply "morning.", in Japan refers to discount breakfast menus available in the mornings at cafes and restaurants. Nagoya is famous around the country for this service. Here are five select cafes in Nagoya with outstanding cheap and tasty morning sets perfect to go to if you're staying at a hotel or ryokan inn without breakfast.

1. Rajakivi

This cafe offers Scandinavian-style morning sets. The spacious cafe with Scandinavian interior decorations is a comfortable place to spend a relaxing time in. The cafe not only has Scandinavian decorations, but also serves breakfast items from Scandinavia, such as Finnish-style Pancakes (500 JPY), the traditional Danish-style open-face sandwich, Smoerrebroed (comes with soup, 850 JPY), and Robert's Coffee (420 JPY and up), popular in Finland. Also, if you order a drink during morning service time, you can select a free Scandinavian-style bread from one of four choices. This cafe is recommended for when you want to have a special, relaxing morning.

This is a bakery cafe opened by a French baker who has been studying bread-making since the age of 15, and his Japanese wife, who trained in pastry-making in France, and is dedicated to authentic tastes and textures. The croissants that are flaky on the surface and moist and chewy inside are a popular item with passionate fans. The Morning Set (799 JPY (incl. tax) is a cost-effective set of a basket of freshly-baked breads and a drink.

3. SAINT GERMAIN TENDRESSE Nagoya Branch

SAINT-GERMAIN is a bakery chain operating primarily in the Tokyo metropolitan area, but with branches across Japan and abroad. SAINT-GERMAIN is dedicated to its breads, and TENDRESSE is the shop that it opened in Nagoya. "Tendresse" is a French word that means kindness and tenderness. The shop is popular for the breads baked using traditional methods by experienced bakers using carefully selected ingredients. There are two morning sets, the Morning Toast Set (530 JPY (incl. tax)) and Croque Monsieur Set (630 JPY (incl. tax)), and it may be difficult decide which one to order. TENDRESSE is in a convenient location next to Nagoya Station.

4. Bera Coffee Sakae Branch

Bera Coffee is one of the pioneers of the Nagoya cafe culture. The Viennese-style Coffee (500 JPY), which comes with a high-quality fresh cream on top of a coffee with high bitterness is the cafe's signature drink. As an established cafe, it offers a traditional Nagoya morning set, which means that when you order a drink, it comes with brown sugar bread and a boiled egg. A non-morning item that is recommended is the Azuki Butter Toast Sandwich (550 JPY), a toasted sandwich of butter and Ogura-an (sweet azuki bean paste). This is a popular Nagoya specialty commonly referred to as Ogura toast. It's so good it's addictive, so give it a try!

4. Bera Coffee Sakae Branch

5. Komeda's Coffee

Komeda's Coffee is a chain that started in Aichi, and now has shops across the country. It opened a branch in Tokyo more than 10 years ago, and brought the Nagoya morning culture to the Tokyo metropolitan area. It offers a morning set which includes a thick piece of toast and boiled egg when you order a drink such as the blended coffee (420 JPY). Some branches offer the choice of either the "handmade egg paste" or Nagoya specialty Ogura-an instead of the boiled egg. Komeda has many specialty items other than the Morning Service, such as the Shiro-Noir (600 JPY), a fluffy danish pastry topped with soft-serve ice cream, so it is recommended for those who want to experience the tastes from the Nagoya cafe culture.
