Nagasaki is one of the leading sightseeing destinations in the Kyushu region. While it is known as a port city, it is also home to many famous restaurants that serve meat. Here are five restaurants that serve such dishes as yakiniku (grilled meat) and steaks in Nagasaki that have been handpicked for their exquisite meat menu.

1. Grill Gochigyu

Grill Gochigyu is a restaurant that is located on the fourth floor of Yume Town Yumesaito in Nagasaki, offering a sprawling view of Nagasaki port through the windows. If only for the fact that it is labeled as a specialty restaurant, this spot is particular about the use of beef from Nagasaki in its hamburgers and steaks. You will be glad to know that the Gochigyu Hamburger (1,404 JPY (incl. tax) for 150g), Nagasaki Wagyu Steak (3,780 JPY (incl. tax) 150g) and other dishes here come at very affordable prices. This restaurant is located inside a shopping center and has chairs and menu for children, so it is recommended for the entire family.

The Kaiseki Course (full-course meal) (4,000 JPY (excl. tax)) is a filling set meal that comes with Tan Shio (salted tongue), Jo Karubi (boneless ribs) and other meats, along with soup and dessert. There are private rooms with sunken kotatsu (table over an electric heater), so you can relax and dine in peace. This restaurant is also recommended to those who love hole-in-the-wall joints.

Matsusyou is a restaurant that is recommended to those who want to enjoy an adults’ night out. Here, you can taste carefully selected Japanese black beef from Nagasaki that is cooked many different ways, including steak, shabu-shabu (thinly sliced meat cooked quickly in hot soup stock with vegetables), sukiyaki (beef hot pot) and seiro mushi (steaming in a bamboo steamer). Various courses are available for each cooking method, including the Ja-odori Course Akami (lean meat) (5,500 JPY (incl. tax)) for teppanyaki (grilled on an iron plate), and the Kagomachi (7,600 JPY (incl. tax)) for shabu-shabu. There are tables inside this restaurant that has a chic atmosphere, but if you want to enjoy the food with your eyes, too, then you have to sit at the counter on the third floor. Note that such counter seats are strictly by advance reservation. The chefs will grill the food on an iron place right in front of you, so you will get to relish the meat with your eyes and your tongue.

Since you’re in Nagasaki already, then it would be a great idea to visit a well-known restaurant. Try Osakaya Hamamachi Shop. Boasting high-quality meats that offer great value for your money, this restaurant is one of the most popular in all of Kyushu. The Kokoro (6,000 JPY (excl. tax)), its No.1 bestselling course, will let you taste premium meats a little at a time as it comes with salted prime black beef tongue, bite-sized Chateaubriand steak and other dishes. And if you want to indulge in a little luxury, then order the Mugen (8,000 JPY (excl. tax)), a course in which only Japanese black beef of the highest class in Japan is used. Now if you are not a fan of such kind of marbling, you can always order from a wide array of refreshing lean meats of the highest grade. Note that this restaurant is famous, so it would be best to make a reservation in advance.

5. Rinrin

Rinrin is popular among those who want to eat their fill of delicious meats without hurting the wallet. Its popular offering, the Tabe-Nomihodai 2h (two-hour all-you-can-eat and all-you-can-drink) (4,000 JPY (excl. tax)) is a buffet of carefully chosen Saga beef. Customers get to enjoy bottomless soft drinks and some alcoholic beverages with this set. You can order the classic kalbi (barbecued ribs), salted tongue, offal, and draft beer, but only just a glass. If you want meats outside of the buffet course, then try the Moriawase (assorted) (prices start at 1,900 JPY) that comes with four kinds of meat that change in combination depending on the theme. You can also order yakitori (chicken pieces grilled on a skewer) to go for 90 JPY (excl. tax) per stick, so if you want to drink again at your hotel, then try their yakitori for your snack.
