Kyushu is a Treasure Trove for Local Chicken Breeds! 5 Restaurants to Eat Delicious Local Chicken
Kyushu has plenty of unique local chicken breeds, such as Miyazaki Jitokko. Here are 5 izakaya (gastropubs) in Kyushu where you can try some of them.
1. Tori to Sanchoku Yasai Konotori (Fukuoka)
This is an izakaya in a renovated traditional home. They base their menus on 2 types of local chicken and vegetables fresh from the farm. Chirandori, a type of local chicken, is used for Toriyaki (730 JPY (excl. tax)), a new dish from Hakata that's grilled in front of you on a special round grill. Sakurajimadori, a type of chicken with little fat, can be enjoyed in two different types of hot pot. The Mizutaki (1,800 JPY (excl. tax)), a Fukuoka specialty, is made using Sakurajimadori chicken broth that was stewed for 10 hours, and always receives praise from customers. They also have a wide variety of sake from all over the country but focusing on local sake from Fukuoka that you can have along with their chicken dishes. 2. Jidoriya Yamato Bekkan (Fukuoka)
This is a restaurant 5 minutes from Nakasu-Kawabata Station in Fukuoka. As the name "Jidori" ("local chicken") reflects, this restaurant is known for its delicious local chicken created by the owner who loves local chicken above all else. They also have Hakata Mizutaki (2,000 JPY (excl. tax)) here, but the recommended dish is definitely the Tori no Sukiyaki (1,800 JPY (excl. tax)). The delicious flavor of the chicken itself along with the sweet-salty seasoning makes for a great sukiyaki experience different from sukiyaki made with beef. Another one of their most popular dishes is Umakacchan (780 JPY (excl. tax)), an original dish that's baked to crispiness. If you want to try both dishes, get the Jidoriya Sukiyaki Course (3,000 JPY (excl. tax)).
3. Gunkei Honten Kakushigura (Miyazaki)
This is a restaurant in an alley housed inside a Japanese style-building made to look like a white-walled warehouse. This restaurant uses Miyazaki Jitokko, which has springy meat and a richness that fills your mouth. Every dish they make is charcoal-grilled to perfection with an addicting texture yet exquisite softness. The Premium Momoyaki L (2,600 JPY (excl. tax) for 400g) is grilled thigh meat, and it's so popular that it sells out. Some people say it's a must every time they visit the restaurant. There are also 4 courses available starting at 2,800 JPY (excl. tax)). The Kakushigura Tanno Course (3,000 JPY (incl. tax)) is a popular course that includes Miyazaki's famous dish, chicken namban (fried chicken topped with vinegar tartar sauce).
4. Izakaya Denden Chuo Main Branch (Kagoshima)
This shop welcomes you with red lanterns. After you pass through the red noren curtains, there is tatami seating on the 1st and 2nd floor, so no matter where you sit, there's a traditional atmosphere around you. The Jidori Sumibiyaki (690 JPY (incl. tax)) of grilled local chicken is a popular dish. The Dendenmaki (190 JPY (incl. tax)) uses pork, but the pork and perilla leaf match so well it's become one of this shop's most popular dishes. You can also get charcoal-grilled yakitori (chicken skewer) for 130 JPY (incl. tax) each. There are lots of ala carte dishes to choose, and all of them are reasonably priced, but if you want a real deal try the 2-Hour Nomihodai-tsuki Course (3,000 JPY (incl. tax)), an all-you-can-drink course with 6 dishes.
5. Honmaru FC Tobata Branch (Fukuoka)
This restaurant offers Hakata Jidori, a type of local chicken that releases flavor the more you chew it. The Jidori Momo Sumiyaki (M, 1,000 JPY (excl. tax) for 2 servings) is charcoal-grilled thigh that's seasoned simply with salt. You can add yuzu kosho (pepper and yuzu citrus) or garlic soy sauce for an addicting flavor. They have a variety of chicken dishes, such as Jidori Tataki (780 JPY (excl. tax)) and Jidori Chicken Namban (680 JPY (excl. tax)). Of course, there are courses where you can enjoy Hakata Jidori in different ways. The Hakata Jidori Course (2,000 JPY (incl. tax)) is very reasonably priced so if you want to have a lot of Hakata Jidori but don't know how, try this!
