Five Select Restaurants in Kagoshima Serving Must-Try Kurobuta Dishes
The Berkshire pig raised in Kagoshima, called Kagoshima Kurobuta, is a brand of pork that is famous across the country. Here are five restaurants near stations that serve outstanding dishes using Kagoshima Kurobuta.
1. Juan Chuo Station West Exit Branch
This restaurant serves smooth and rich kurobuta pork raised amidst the great outdoors with carefully chosen feed at Watanabe Berkshire Farm. The recommended dish is the shabu shabu of thinly sliced kurobuta pork that is dipped in a pot of dashi soup stock and enjoyed with a sauce. The restaurant's specialty, Juan Specialty Salt Shabu Shabu (Juan Course, 4,536 JPY (incl. tax)), is an outstanding dish in which you can taste the sweetness and umami flavors of the delicate kurobuta pork. At lunchtime (11:00 am to 3:00 pm), there is a Kurobuta Shio Shabu Lunch (2,592 JPY (incl. tax)), which is a good deal. The restaurant is in a convenient location just two minutes on foot from the West Exit of Kagoshima Chuo Station.
This is a restaurant that has been specializing in kurobuta pork dishes since opening 30 years ago. The recommended dish is the Black Cutlet of Filet Meal (2,000 JPY (excl. tax)), which has a striking black batter. The pork is deep fried in a mineral-rich batter made with bamboo charcoal and black sesame seeds mixed into homemade panko breadcrumbs. At first sight, you may wonder if it is burnt, but of course it isn't, and it is a popular item with a crunchy batter and juicy meat. The restaurant is two minutes on foot from Tenmonkan-dori Station on the tram. Be sure to try the black cutlet that is only available here.
3. Kurokatsutei Tenmonkan Branch/Kurobe
Kurokatsutei is a restaurant where you can enjoy lunch sets such as Tonkatsu Teishoku at lunchtime and changes its name to Kurobe in the evening, when it operates as an izakaya restaurant. The Superior Pork Loin Cutlet Teishoku (1,560 JPY (excl. tax)) with an outstanding cutlet of sweet, high-grade pork loin is recommended for lunch. In the evening, you can't miss the Kurobuta Pork Kushiyaki Skewer (100 JPY (excl. tax) and up). A variety of different kurobuta pork parts are grilled on skewers. Why not have it together with the Flight of Five Kagoshima Shochu (1,000 JPY)? The restaurant is one minute on foot from Asahi-dori Station on the tram.

4. Yu Fifth Branch
This is a restaurant that serves a full menu of more than 200 outstanding Kagoshima dishes of not only kurobuta pork, but also of seafood and Satsuma free range chicken. It has a wide selection of regional dishes made with the fabulous pork brand, Kagoshima Kurobuta, that has sweetness in the fat. The recommended item is the standard kurobuta pork dish, Braised Kurobuta Pork Belly (600 JPY (excl. tax)), of pork belly that has been braised with sugar and soy sauce until it is so soft it seems to melt. The pork belly that is cooked till you can easily cut it with your chopsticks is outstanding. The restaurant is one minute on foot from Tenmonkan Station on the Taniyama tram line. It serves a wide selection of regional cuisine other than kurobuta pork dishes.
5. Ichiniisan Tenmonkan Branch
This is a restaurant where you can enjoy shabu shabu of Kagoshima Kurobuta, which has a great balance of superior fat and a distinctive sweetness (2,800 JPY for the kurobuta shabu shabu on its own; 3,800 JPY and up for courses). Although shabu shabu is usually eaten with ponzu citrus sauce or sesame sauce, it is served with soba sauce at this restaurant. The sauce enhances the sweetness of the kurobuta pork, which tastes refreshing with plenty of white negi scallions (unlimited servings). The fresh soba noodles that are added to the soup full of the umami flavors of the kurobuta pork are a wonderful finish to the meal. The restaurant is three minutes on foot from Tenmonkan-dori Station on the tram. The kurobuta pork shabu shabu here is unique to a restaurant owned by a soba shop.
You can thoroughly enjoy the flavors of kurobuta pork in all its incarnations, be it thickly-sliced tonkatsu or thinly-sliced shabu shabu.
