Kyoto has many places for sake brewing, from Kyotango in the north to Yamashiro in the south, an area of over 100km. Here are 4 stores where you can buy delicious sake from those breweries in Kyoto.

1. Meishukan Takimoto

This shop is a five minute walk from Gojo Station on the Karasuma subway line, facing Rokujo-dori. The shop is overflowing with sake not just from Kyoto, but from all over the country. They keep the quality by using huge refrigerators and rooms kept at low temperatures so you can buy sake in its best condition, something that you can only enjoy at a specialty shop like this one. They choose sake based on your tastes regardless of brand name, so this is a recommended spot for beginners. Next door is WINE'S Budoukan Takimoto, where they offer more than 1,500 types of wine from around the world. This is a shopping spot that liquor lovers won't be able to resist!

2. Sake no Yamamoto Kyoto Branch

This shop is right by Sanjo Station on the Keihan Main Line. This is a shop that supports breweries from Kyoto and around the country and introduces them to customers. The clean interior is full of brands from around the country, all of which are filled with the dreams of their brewers. A recommended sake is Eikun, from a brewery called Saito Shuzo based in Fushimi. They use a rice made for sake called Shuku that is only grown in Kyoto, and as a junmai daiginjo sake (top quality sake with no added alcohol or sugar), you can enjoy its fragrance and flavor. If you find yourself in the area, you should definitely stop by.

3. Tomiya The CUBE Branch

This is a branch of Tomiya Shoten, a shop that carries local Kyoto sake and tsukemono (Japanese pickles), that's in the B1F floor of The CUBE, a shopping area inside Kyoto Station. The recommended sake is the Sawaya Matsumoto series from Matsumoto Brewery in Fushimi-ku. The junmai version is good for people that like refreshing, easy-to-drink liquors. It's right by the station, so this is a great shop for people who don't have much time on their hands.

4. Hirasou Saketen

This shop, a five minute walk from Fushimi Momoyama Station on the Keihan Main Line, was constructed with the image of the system regarding buildings and gardens that decorate Kyoto in mind. This system keeps buildings and gardens preserved over generations. This store was built in 1901 and keeps its original facade, so this is an example of a shop that will continue to be passed down to future generations.
A brand sake that you can buy here is Shiboritate Namagenshu Tareguchi (1,032 JPY (incl. tax)). It used to be only available to brewers of the factory, and it has a mellow taste. There are other products that allow you to feel the history and tradition of Kyoto as well.
