Kitao is a shop based in Tambaguchi, Kyoto, that has been dealing in black beans, azuki beans, and sugar from Tamba for 150 years since the Edo Period. The cafe at the Nishiki Branch offers set menus and sweets made with mortar-ground black bean kinako powder.
Uji Kintoki (756 JPY). "The matcha green tea syrup made with an abundance of the highest quality Uji matcha green tea and finished to an elegant sweetness with homemade kakigori shaved ice syrup is so strong it will wake you up. Be sure to have it with black bean soft serve or anko azuki bean paste!"
The matcha green tea syrup mixed with syrup made from rock candy has a high matcha content and a thick, syrupy texture. The sweetness is minimized for balance with the black bean soft serve.
In addition to the first floor, where you can see the courtyard, there is cafe space on the second floor. The atmosphere of the Kyo Machiya-style building is an appeal as well.

Tsuboichi Seicha Honpo is a cafe managed by an established tea wholesaler which was established in Sakai, the birthplace of Sen no Rikyu, in 1850. It serves Japanese teas with rich flavors and handmade sweets made with quality tea leaves. The charming building that was built during the Edo Period is also a draw.
Rikyu Matcha Kintoki (860 JPY). The ice shaved using blades made specially by a knife shop in Sakai has a fluffy texture that melts softly in the mouth like cotton candy. The special syrup made by patiently bringing out the flavors of matcha green tea is rich with just a hint of bitterness!"
Plenty of high grade matcha green tea fermented in a cellar, where the temperature and humidity is thoroughly managed to bring out the richness, is used.
The interior makes great use of the machiya-style house that was built during the Edo Period. It is spacious and comfortable.

Yukinoshita Kyoto Main Store is hugely popular for its kakigori shaved ice and pancakes made using carefully selected ingredients such as domestic fruit and natural water. The kakigori shaved ice prepared from ice made by freezing fruit juice and other ingredients with a small quantity of sugar maintains its rich flavors to the last bite.
Kyoto Uji Matcha Ice (810 JPY). "Quality Uji matcha green tea is used not just in the syrup, but also in the ice itself. The soft and fresh aroma and rich flavors fills the mouth. There is condensed milk ice cream and anko sweet bean paste inside."
The ice is made over a span of two days using original matcha green tea procured specially from a tea wholesaler in Uji. Matcha syrup is further poured over it.
An interior with a calm feel that makes use of the elegance of a Kyomachiya-style house built during the Taisho Era. Lines form during the summer.

Shimizu Ippo-en Kyoto Main Store is a cafe managed directly by a tea wholesaler that supplies high grade tea across the country. At the cafe, creative Japanese-style sweets such as parfaits and kakigori shaved ice that incorporate the natural aroma and flavors of tea are popular.
Uji Matcha Ice Espuma Style (1,026 JPY). "It is because it is a tea wholesaler that they can use high-grade matcha green tea that is 30,000 JPY for 1kg in abundance. The creamy texture that melts gently in the mouth and the deep aroma and flavors of matcha will get you hooked."
Enough matcha to make five cups of usucha light tea is used. Wasanbon sugar syrup and a little fresh cream is added to make an espuma.

Ochanoko is a tea specialty store that sells teas such as Yamato tea and Taiwanese tea. It began offering kakigori shaved ice throughout the year ahead of others in Nara, and its fluffy kakigori served with a lovingly made homemade syrup has a strong and steady fan base.
Koi Koi Otonano Matcha Shaved Ice (823 JPY). "Plenty of aromatic matcha green tea from Nara is used. You can thoroughly enjoy the natural sweetness and aroma of the tea. The combination of the milk ice cream from Uemura Farm in Nara and the homemade mung bean paste inside is fabulous."
High grade matcha green tea is used abundantly. It is brewed with a tea whisk with 70℃ water added little by little so it does not become bitter.
The interior with photographs of deer has subtle expressions of a love of Nara. Tea leaves are sold as well.
