Kyoto is one of Japan's most well-known sightseeing destinations. If you're planning on arriving in Kyoto early in the morning so you can effectively see all the spots you can, or stay at cost effective hotels that don't include meals, you'll want to go somewhere that serves delicious breakfast. Here are 5 restaurants with tasty breakfasts that you should visit while you're in Kyoto!

1. IKARIYA 365

This Italian restaurant has an excellent location on the 1st floor of Keio Prelia Hotel, just under a 5-minute walk from Shijo Station or Gojo Station. The morning menu consists of the Bistro Buffet Morning (2,000 JPY (excl. tax), open from 6:30 am to 10:00 am, in which you can eat as much as you want for 60 minutes. The diverse menu includes salads, salad toppings, bistro appetizers, and porridge soup, among many other delicious options! An absolute must-try is the morning pizza, which is baked in a kiln in-house!

2. KOI-KOI

This asagayu (breakfast porridge) and ochazuke (broth poured on top of rice) specialty restaurant was established by Tankuma, a Kyoto-style restaurant with roughly 90 years of history. Asagayu, a gentle, simmered rice dish that you eat for breakfast, is a traditional dish that's often eaten in Kyoto. You can enjoy asagayu at this restaurant in their Asagayu Meal (2,300 JPY (incl. tax), can order for 2+ people), which is offered from 8:00 am to 10:00 am. The colorful and delicous set meal is based around asagayu, and also includes appetizers, grilled fish, and cooked vegetables.

A Japanese restaurant inside APA Hotel Kyoto Gion EXCELLENT, which is located very close to Gion. THE BREAKFAST, which is their breakfast buffet option, is extremely popular for being avialable to non-guests as well as hotel guests. The buffet has 50 different items on its menu, including Japanese cuisine such as house-made tofu, Kyoto-style Japanese pickles, and 4 kinds of Kyoto-style side dishes that change every day, as well as freshly baked croissants, cereal, and salad. For adults, the price is 1,600 JPY (incl. tax) or 1,400 JPY (incl. tax) for early reservations. For children ages 4 to 11, the price is 960 JPY (incl. tax) or 840 JPY (incl. tax) for early reservations.

A casual izakaya (Japanese pub) where you can enjoy their delicious traditional Kyoto home cooking, which is known as "obanzai." From 7:00 am to 10:00 am (last entry 9:30 am), they offer the Morning Buffet, which is 1,500 JPY (incl. tax) for adults, 750 JPY (incl. tax) for 4-year old children to preschool-age, and free for kids under 4 years old. The menu changes daily, and in addition to Kyoto obanzai, porridge, and ochazuke, they have a variety of other options such as udon (thick noodles), yakisoba (fried noodles), bread, waffles, salad, and dessert!

At this popular restaurant, you'll be able to savor Japanese cuisine in a traditional Kyoto-style townhouse. The IZAMA Breakfast Obanzai Buffet (Adults 2,400 JPY (excl. tax), Children ages 6-12 1,200 JPY (excl. tax)) served from 6:30 am to 10:00 am (L.O. 9:30 am) is very popular, and you can enjoy traditional home-cooked dishes of Kyoto to your heart's content! In addition to the many seasonal obanzai vegetable dishes, the chicken meatball hot pot and the steamed vegetables with sesame ponzu (citrus-seasoned soy sauce) are also popular picks. Don't forget to try the Kyoto brand rice, too!
