The Fushimi area of Kyoto is full of sights to see, such as the Fushimi Inari-taisha. In addition to the famous tourist spots, there are many izakaya that serve wonderful food. This time, five highly recommended izakaya are introduced.
1. Samasama Otesuji Branch
This izakaya is a five-minute walk from Fushimi-Momoyama Station. Its specialty is the Simmered Beef Tail (950 JPY for a medium size (excl. tax) and up) that is simmered for eight hours. It is a popular item that is enjoyed topped with a lot of Kujo negi scallions from Kyoto and is highly rated for the melt-in-your-mouth texture and the concentrated umami (savory Japanese) flavors. This izakaya's other signature menu item is the Kushikatsu (plate of five chosen by the chef) (500 JPY (excl. tax)) of deep fried meats, fish and vegetable skewers. The piping hot freshly fried skewers go perfectly with beer. This izakaya has an English menu.
This izakaya is popular for the more than 20 different brands of sake that it has at any given time, as well as the delicious dishes that are made with seasonal ingredients. Its signature menu is the Sumibiyaki Plate (1,700 JPY (excl. tax)). Dried fish packed with umami flavors, the highest A5 grade wagyu beef from Kyoto, and fresh vegetables such as plump shiitake mushrooms are charcoal grilled to bring out their natural umami flavors.
3. Kodawariya Fushimi-Momoyama Station Branch
This is a popular izakaya in a convenient location just one minute on foot from Fushimi-Momoyama Station. Its specialty menu item is the Tempura Plate (5 pieces) (890 JPY (excl. tax)). The fantastic tempura, fried in 100% rice bran oil, is light and crunchy. The ingredients change by the season. This izakaya is also known for dishes made with fresh fish procured directly from the Maizuru Port in northern Kyoto. Sashimi is a great way to savor the taste of the fresh fish (prices vary by ingredient). This izakaya has English, Chinese (simplified and traditional) and Korean menus.
4. Kyomachichaya Fushimi-Momoyama Branch
Fushimi is an area known for its many sake breweries, and this izakaya is in Fushimi Sakagura Kouji, a popular site that has approximately 100 different sake made by 17 breweries in Fushimi at any given time. At this izakaya, you can enjoy a variety of dishes that go well with sake, starting with kushikatsu deep-fried skewers and oden (a pot dish of various ingredients, including vegetables, cooked in a broth). The first floor is a bar area to enjoy sake and the second floor can be reserved for large parties and is equipped with a karaoke machine. Some recommended dishes include the Kushikatsu Omakase 5 Pieces (550 JPY (incl. tax)) and Oden 5 Pieces (500 JPY (incl. tax)).
This is an izakaya with a quiet atmosphere where you can enjoy fantastic food and sake. There is a variety of seating types, such as counter seating appropriate for those dining on their own and comfortable table seating. The menu includes a wide selection of creative dishes that mix a variety of elements, such as the Avocado and Shrimp Mixed with Wasabi and Mayonnaise (700 JPY) with a fantastic sauce of spicy wasabi and mild mayonnaise.
