Enjoy Fall Gourmet! Five Recommended Restaurants in Kyoto

There are so many tasty ingredients in Kyoto in the fall such as mackerel, a type of taro called ebi-taro, chestnuts, matsutake mushrooms, etc. Here are five restaurants, mostly serving Japanese cuisine, where you can enjoy Kyoto's fall gourmet food.

1. Tempura Endo Okazaki

This is a restaurant in the Okazaki area, known for Heian Jingu's large torii gate and the quiet flow of Lake Biwa canal. At Tempura Endo Okazaki, you can enjoy Kyoto-style tempura that is fried lightly to maximize the flavors of the ingredients. The ingredients include seafood, such as uni sea urchin wrapped in nori seaweed and fresh Japanese tiger prawns, as well as vegetables such as Kyo yasai vegetables from Kyoto, wild plants, and root vegetables. In the fall, premium ingredients such as goby, matsutake mushrooms, and gingko that are unique to Kyoto are on the menu. Courses starting at 4,000 JPY (excl. tax) are offered at lunchtime, and kaiseki courses starting at 10,000 JPY (excl. tax) are available in the evening. The courses include tempura, appetizers, entremets, and rice dishes.

1. Tempura Endo Okazaki

2. Rojimon

This is a restaurant in a renovated machiya-style house that was built 130 years ago. The food served in this quintessentially Kyoto space is mainly Japanese cuisine including obanzai dishes traditionally cooked at home in Kyoto, grilled fish, and dried fish grilled on shichirin charcoal braziers. The Homemade Zaru Tofu (480 JPY (excl. tax)) that has the perfect soft texture and sweetness, menu items made with yuba tofu skin, and sashimi of seasonal fish are popular. They also serve a selection of creative Western-style dishes, such as cream pasta with uni and fly fish roe (1,000 JPY (excl. tax)). The restaurant also has a wide selection of drinks, including sake and shochu from around the country and wine.

2. Rojimon

3. Aritsune

This is a restaurant where you can enjoy great food and drinks in a relaxing environment, with a menu that consists primarily of a la carte dishes. Here, you can experience traditional Kyoto-style cuisine with modern twists that you can enjoy with all of your senses. Its specialty is charcoal grilled seasonal vegetables and fish—outstanding dishes in which you can taste the natural flavors of the ingredients the moment you bite into them. They also offer Matsutake Mushrooms Tempura (2,000 JPY (excl. tax)), a fall specialty, as well as Grilled Gingko (600 JPY) (excl. tax)). The combination plate of appetizers of the day, Hassun (1,500 JPY (excl. tax)) is also a signature menu item. It goes well with both sake and wine.

3. Aritsune

4. Kirara

This is a restaurant in the atmospheric geisha quarter of Gion, known for the cobblestone streets. The restaurant's interior has a cozy, welcoming feel. Here, you can enjoy a variety of dishes made with vegetables grown and procured in Kyoto and fresh, seasonal fish. The obanzai dishes (800 JPY (excl. tax) and up) include a wide selection of fall flavors such as Seasonal Fish Nanbanzuke (marinated, deep-fried fish) and Ebi-taro with Yuzu-Flavored Miso Sauce. The restaurant also serves a la carte dishes (1,000 JPY (excl. tax) and up) that are changed monthly and utilizes seasonal ingredients. At lunchtime, the Kirara Gozen (3,000 JPY (incl. tax)), which includes a variety of specialty items, and other dishes are available. In the evening, there are courses (5,000 JPY (excl. tax) and up) and a la carte dishes.

4. Kirara

5. Ganko

Takase River has long been beloved by the people of Kyoto. This restaurant was built on the former site of a villa owned by a wealthy Edo Period (1603 - 1867) merchant who was instrumental in building the canal. There is a garden on the grounds where you can enjoy seasonal scenery, such as the fall foliage, and in which water that is the source of Takase River flows. The restaurant serves Takase Gozen (2,800 JPY (excl. tax and service) and up) at lunch and Kaiseki Ryori (5,000 JPY (excl. tax and service) and up) in the evening. You can enjoy Kyoto-style cuisine using seasonal ingredients at reasonable prices.
